Description
Because political correctness is for squares.Okay, this comic is based on a semi-real event that happened to me yesterday. I did make a holiday card for a soldier (
For those who do not know what political correctness is, PC is a term applied to language, ideas, policies, or behavior seen as seeking to minimize offense to gender, racial, cultural, religious (or anti-religious), disabled, aged or other identity groups. Some examples of political correctness include referring to starving people in Zimbabwe as "food insecure," calling terrorists "misguided criminals," requiring public property to be either religious holiday neutral or represent all major holidays, saying "police officer" instead of "policeman," and changing the song "Baa Baa Black Sheep" to "Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep." I kid you not, these are real examples that have actually been used.
I get that political correctness is supposed to help eliminate exclusiveness and offensiveness of language, and it would be nice if that were possible. But it is only an unrealistic, utopian dream. Language will always offend someone and exclude someone, no matter how you use it. Even the most politically correct situation will offend at least one person. In the end, political correctness is an unnecessary form of censorship, infringing on the freedom of speech. It is rather comparable to Newspeak from 1984. Why can't people just get thicker skins, instead of getting offended when someone says "God bless you"?
As for the art, I tried drawing myself again, but the face looks off.

I'm sorry Sir/Ma'am/Zir but, you must remove this image. You have a womyn with long hair and that's racist. Also, there might be people who are sensitive to the color green. So please refrain from doing any art in the future because, we don't want people's feelings to be hurt.
(Just kidding, nice work.)

Because everyone knows all conservatives are white
And we all know that silly conservatives honestly think people having different opinions than us means oppression, and that totally wasn't a strawman you pulled out of your head

Well, I'm not sure what post you're replying to, because I never said all conservatives were white (probably just 99.98% at most). However, when someone draws a blatant comparison between political correctness and Newspeak, the language from one of the greatest totalitarian dystopias of all time, you sound quite silly when you deny that anyone was calling it "oppression." It also hilarious when someone plays that "Holiday instead of Christmas=Orwellian mind control" card and then you call my argument a strawman.

it's irreligious not anti-religious.

Mmm... IMHO, the initial concept of PC is probably good. But taking it to the extreme, like you've described here, is just... nonsense.
And that's NO GOOD.

Kamden In reply to SymbolsWriter [2011-03-11 20:25:31 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, I'd definitely agree that being courteous with your rhetoric is always a good thing. If I asked someone to tone down their virulent language (and I often do, because I don't like hearing excessive cussing or epithets, even in joking around), they will do so if they care about me and my opinion. But there's a big difference between being considerate as a private individual and modifying rhetoric as a public figure of authority to achieve certain ends. I don't think people should overreact to individual cases of political correctness, but to be wary of trends, because 1984-esque political correctness and manipulation of language has happened before, most particularly in Mao's China. I highly recommend reading Red Azalea by Anchee Min, a woman who lived in China during the height of Mao's reign. It's very shocking and eye-opening.

Hmm... Well, I think that I probably can't understand that problem completely, as it is not an issue in my country (yet, anyway), and I did not do research in the matter.
As for the Red Azalea, thanks for recommendation, but my "books to be read" list is kinda long already, so I probably won't be able to take a look at it any time soon. Still, I'll check it out if I get the chance.

And another thing...this is a nation of freedom, but with this whole "let's cater to the minority" attitude, those freedoms are going away, fast. We should live in a country where I'm not advised to NOT say "Merry Christmas" just because it has the word "Christ." If you're offended, don't listen to it. That's all. If a billboard offends you, turn your head. Although, attempting to deliberately offend people IS going too far, I'll admit that.

In addition to what I've already written (looking through faves today) I must say, how is religion offensive. I mean it could be because I'm in Hawaii and Muslims Catholics Buddhists they all get along out here (people don't like the fact I'm Atheist but meh w/e). I'm sure that a soldier in a Iraq would be happy to receive a letter from ANYONE cheering them on REGARDLESS of the contents or context. I mean a black man could be like "Good luck out there brotha!"
or a religious person could be like "God bless you!". The soldier is going to be ELATED at the sight of support the context it's put in is irrelevant.
Politically correctness is incorrect because it offends our forefathers...what now mister stick up my a** people?
π: 0 β©: 1
Kamden In reply to InumaruSama [2009-12-15 02:40:58 +0000 UTC]
I couldn't agree more. I think some people find religion "offensive" because they see it as an "institution for indoctrination and brainwashing," which is ridiculous. Me wishing someone a "Merry Christmas" does not imply that I want for them to convert to my faith, and neither does "God bless you." A well-wishing is still a well-wishing, regardless of how it is said.
PC would definitely offend our forefathers, especially since political correctness was a product of the tyranny of the Soviet Union (even the term was "political correctness" was coined by the Soviets) as a means of censorship and, ironically, indoctrination.

So true: political correct people are often basing the things they deem right on mainstream idea's instead of commen sence.
For instance it is ok for a black person to use "nigger" but it is not allowed for a white person to use the same word because of his skincolor and should expect to be beaten up (politically correct it was his own fault then...)
People should base their idea's on what is going on right here and now and base it on the situation.
Well done

Well, I won't make any assumptions about your specific views, but all I can say is I'm with you 100% on the anti-PC thought train. The cartoon itself is simultaneously humorous and thought-provoking, as is the explanation for PC (people actually have yelled at me for saying God Bless You :C), and really enforces the fact is that, sooner or later, someone in this world is going to offend. Now, it gives no excuse for offensive language, but excessive censorship just is not the way to go. So I guess I can say thank you for putting an image to the thoughts running through my mind everyday when I hear about another Christmas celebration being shut down or another business reverting to saying "Happy Holidays" or another ridiculous form of a desperate attempt to make sure everyone's happy by taking away any possible offense in the human language.
