Description
Architecture major here, but I love to sew! A few of my friends were struggling in finding a good pattern, so I made this to help out. I think it's pretty easy, and I hope you all find this easy to follow. Let me know if you have questions or think I should add something in!If you would like to see the Gwendolyn black skirt I made using this method, check out my results here!

oh hey, I'm 5'8, too! I am sure you will be fine so long as you buy enough fabric. Even 45" W fabrics should be enough for our inseams. You will have to do your skirt length x 2, waist 2*pi*R to know how many yards of fabric to buy.Β

did you use tulle or something to make it puff out?

Yes! I used tulle and a 4-hoop crinoline.

Oh my goodness this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for. And your Gwendolyn costume is stunning! Just wondering, do I need to make any adjustments/changes to the measurement in order to wear a petticoat under the skirt? I'm looking to get a nice full effect similar to that of your Gwendolyn. Thanks in advance

Not at all, a full skirt has ample volume to house a petticoat. If you were making a gore skirt, you would need to make sure you have room. This is why you need a ridiculous amount of fabric for a floor-length one.

My fabrics width isn't long enough to support my desired skirt length- is there a way to still use a circle skirt?

Kapalaka In reply to pupurutier [2014-06-25 13:35:37 +0000 UTC]
Hi peachtier! Yes, there is, though you would have more seams in it. You could try doing a gored skirt, in which you would make your pattern out of paper first, then you would fold it up the donut into quarts or fifths, whatever would look best to you. Kind of like slicing a pizza pie. You would then use each slice of the pizza as a piece of your skirt and sew that fabric up together again to get the fullness.
Here is an example image of what the finished product would look similar to.

When I'am making a full circle skirt, I fold the fabric in half, and cut it. But when I unfold it, the full circle skirt was cut in a half, and the other half of the full circle skirt was gone. And now, I have the only half part of the full circle skirt. Can you please tell me what I did wrong? Or I should not fold the fabric in half? Β Please Reply ASAP.

Kapalaka In reply to LuminaAngelica [2013-10-29 16:28:25 +0000 UTC]
ummmm....please answer the following so I can better help.
1. How was the other half gone?
2. How long is your full skirt?
floor length skirts require about 5 yards of fabric and this tutorial assumes that the fabric is unfolded and the floor length skirt is halved. There would have to be two side-seems.

The long of my full circle skirt is floor-length (like a ballgown skirt). I don't get it at the Question no. 1 and that you said that "the floor-length skirt is halved" Do you mean when you cut a full circle skirt I'am going to cut 2 half-full circle skirt and you can stitched it together so there would have to be 2 side seams? Β

"cut 2 half-full circle skirt and you can stitched it together so there would have to be 2 side seams"
That is correct. <3

Oh Okay, but what will happened when I'am going to make a full circle skirt and it has 4 side seams? Thanks and I'am so sorry that I'am always asking some questions like I never understand anything. Thanks again! <3

Don't worry about it. I am just having a bit of trouble understanding your question, though. Do you mean like a doughnut that has been cut into quadrants??? I would just try to make the seams line up with the center front, center back, and side seams.

LuminaAngelica In reply to Kapalaka [2013-11-05 11:49:17 +0000 UTC]
Yes! That's what I meant. Like when I want to have 4 side seams, I'am going to cut a doughnut cut into quadrants.

So the full circle you just fold your fabric in half and draw a big half circle on it? I'm rather...dim when it comes to patterns and stuff. I need to do a really big floor length skirt, and I've got 5metres of fabric for it.....
