Description Cross-posted on my original account, .

Something a bit different from my usual adoptables' pics...
Some of you have asked about the program I use, how do I colour, etc. I now realize that I have not answered any of these questions in this tutorial.

This tutorial is about creating a easy-to-use mould for your adoptables in Paint Tool SAI. I tried to cover every step of my process, with lots of images and little text. The reading flow is somehow irregular but I trust that the arrows will be able to show you the right way.

The Pikachu lineart is free-to-use and can be found in my Linearts/Tutorials Folder.

Note: The lineart was done in SAI with a Wacom tablet, so it's digital. I'll probably do another part on how to make a mould with a traditional lineart, but I'll do that when I have more time, a camera and an inked traditional pic.

About 40-45โ‚ฌ, I believe... I got mine from a friend with an artist uncle and I paid her back in ice cream.

This is the official site anyway: www.systemax.jp/en/sai/

How do you get the multiple psd file linearts all on one file?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Grioxjay [2013-04-29 14:40:23 +0000 UTC]

There's just one lineart in the file. ยฐ-ยฐ

If you mean the layers, you simply have to use the 'Layer>New Layer' directory and a new layer will be added to the one you already own.

what if the opacity lock is not their?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to DEAFHPN [2013-03-08 06:17:54 +0000 UTC]

Then you'll go out of the lines you previously made. I unlock my layers only when I have to edit them, otherwise they stay locked.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

DEAFHPN In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2013-03-08 06:27:36 +0000 UTC]

alright do I need to use that for it to work? I'm new to sai so if I follow all the other steps it should work?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to DEAFHPN [2013-03-08 13:38:47 +0000 UTC]

The opacity lock is useful only on *finished* layers that you want to *recolour*.

For example, if you plan on leaving the lineart always black, you don't need to lock it. But if you create a layer for a mane and then want to recolour it without having to be extra careful with the outline, you must lock it.

The process in the tutorial is my own way of doing things and the one I'm more comfortable with (because I'm a lazyass and like to make my life as easy as possible), but it's not mandatory.

Oh I see! that would be a greet tool to use honestly I have no idea how to do it so I'll probably have to look it up. X3
Oh I see what you mean. It might just take me a while so far I find paint tool sai is a lot easier to color in then photoshop cs3. x3
I'll give it another try sometime today again the first time didn't turn out so well. x3

SAI is definitely easier than PS... One of the reasons why I love it so much. T_T
But I have to admit that for the post-editing, PS is still the best program out there.

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to graphiteGURL [2013-01-10 15:40:56 +0000 UTC]

Sorry, I don't have that program.
The invert short-cut is 'i' in about every art program, but if it's used with Alt, Ctrl or both, or with another control key, I don't know. รฉ_รจ

i actually figured i could fill the white sections. (disregard the last question) but where it says to layer clip, i can't find anything like that. Is it merging the shadow layer with the base layer?

It's beside the 'Opacity Lock' box, as seen in the screenshots. (You are using SAI, right?)

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Oxefer [2012-07-19 22:26:59 +0000 UTC]

I have written a series of journals to answer these questions: [link]
Take a look and then let me know what else do you want me to answer.

(The bases are generally in .psd format, the adoptables images can be .jpeg, .png or some kind of animation format like .gif.)

Fuzzylicious4Eva [2012-06-20 21:30:18 +0000 UTC]

Do you think you`re ever going to make a tutorial on how to do this for Gimp? ...If it can be done in Gimp....

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Fuzzylicious4Eva [2012-06-20 21:34:23 +0000 UTC]

I've never used GIMP in my entire life... Having zero knowledge of the program itself is not a really good starting base to make a tutorial.

Does GIMP allow you to use layers and clipping/locking layers anyway? I've had people having problems with my bases in GIMP, so my guess is that making a base with would be very different from using SAI.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Fuzzylicious4Eva In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2012-06-20 21:54:51 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I guess so. x3

Um, I know you can have layers, but I don`t think you can use clipping/locking layers. I`m also pretty sure the only file type you can have layers in is .xfc if you download something (if that makes any since o3o). I doubt it would work out the same though.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 2

dragonflight100 In reply to Fuzzylicious4Eva [2012-06-23 01:05:16 +0000 UTC]

actually i once had a .png file, and yeah, i think you can lock layers :\

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 0

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Fuzzylicious4Eva [2012-06-21 11:16:02 +0000 UTC]

.xfc? That may be why it doesn't open .psd files...

The absence of a clipping mask is not a great problem, you can avoid it by colouring inside the lines on every layer, but the lock option is pretty much essential if you don't want to spend half the time deleting lines that have gone outside the borders.

exactly what I was looking for...but...does it work with Photoshop too?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to VioletWhirlwind [2012-04-06 08:01:17 +0000 UTC]

I believe so, because imported files keep the same structure. The lock option is the checkered square in the layers organizer and PS has clipping masks too, but I've never used them because when I started using a tablet I had troubles with the pen settings and only SAI worked.

star-craze In reply to ??? [2012-02-29 02:37:23 +0000 UTC]

how do you make "shadow layers"?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to star-craze [2012-02-29 10:22:00 +0000 UTC]

It's a layer in Multiply mode, put on *top* of the base layer and clipped. Actually, for it to work you only need to put it in Multiply mode, but doing the base layer and the clipping saves you all the erasing out of the lineart's borders.

I use markers to colour because they look softer and more traditional-looking than the pen, but it's really the same.

star-craze In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2012-02-29 21:21:01 +0000 UTC]

um can you make a video or livestream/join me and show? because im a beginner and I have no clue about multiply mode or what cliping does *^^
