Description
Cross-posted on my original account, .Something a bit different from my usual adoptables' pics...
Some of you have asked about the program I use, how do I colour, etc. I now realize that I have not answered any of these questions in this tutorial.
This tutorial is about creating a easy-to-use mould for your adoptables in Paint Tool SAI. I tried to cover every step of my process, with lots of images and little text. The reading flow is somehow irregular but I trust that the arrows will be able to show you the right way.
The Pikachu lineart is free-to-use and can be found in my Linearts/Tutorials Folder.
Note: The lineart was done in SAI with a Wacom tablet, so it's digital. I'll probably do another part on how to make a mould with a traditional lineart, but I'll do that when I have more time, a camera and an inked traditional pic.

Right now I don't have the tablet out, but I'll try to explain it here. Actually, it's not hard, you just need to have the program (Paint Tool SAI can be found cracked anywhere on internet) and have the layers exactly as I've put them in the screenshots.
They should be ordered like this:
*top*
Lineart (Blend Mode: Normal)
Shadows (Blend Mode: Multiply) + (Layer Clip)
White Base (Blend Mode: Normal)
*bottom*
The colours will go *under* the shadow layer.
This time, I made the shadows before the colours because it's a 'matrix', but if you want to do a normal drawing it's better to do the colours *before* the shadows.
The layers should be:
*top*
Lineart (Blend Mode: Normal)
* Shadow Layer will go here, same settings as written before
Colours (Blend Mode: Normal) + (Layer Clip)
White Base (Blend Mode: Normal)
*bottom*
My suggestion is to open SAI, set your layers as shown in the screenshot and then pick some colours and do a few tries... When you start with digital programs, while it's good to read some tutorials about them, your best bet is always to experiment with them by playing with all the tools and the settings.

I use the Marker Tool (my specific settings can be found on the Tutorial), choose a light direction and then colour. I prefer to shade without colours because this way I have an idea where they are, even if the colour of the character is dark. (I wear glasses and I'd like to avoid straining my eyes, if I can. )

Is it possible to do opacity lock on a Linework layer, because I don't own a tablet and my lines are wayyy too shaky. >.< with the regular pen tool

The OL works only if you have already drawn the lines, if you want to re-colour them. If you check the OL and try to draw a line *out* of the ones that you already did, nothing shows up. If you have SAI and don't have a tablet, your best bet is to use the 'Vector' layers and the 'Curve' Tool.
(Or you could try to move the 'smoothing' up to 12-15. It's a small bar in the upper center of the main window. I have a wobbly hand too, but the smoothing really makes up for it.)

Yeah that's what I'm just going to work with, vector layers. Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial though! It was incredibly helpful! <3

You check the 'Opacity Lock' box. It's the second/third image from the top.

Thank you, but SAI has a lot of cracked versions... (I think maybe 2 people out of 1000 on this site actually bought the program.)

this is awsome! and it'll help a lot since i just got Sai, and it looks like it has some of the same features as Gimp....
but how did u get the outline to be a color in the final pic?

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Wolfpetal5 [2011-09-28 19:05:47 +0000 UTC]
You go to the 'locked' Lineart, pick up the Pen Tool with the colour you want and... You colour it.
The 'lock' actively stops you from drawing outside the lines that are already present. If you have to modify the lineart, remember to unlock it or else you won't be able to draw on the blank parts of that layer.

Haha, it would be very speedy... When I have the base done, I usually take little more than a few minutes to do the colour design.

then it would have to be from the first line to the last drop of color

Yes, this way it would be longer probably.

it will help a lot just for everyday use! D;
i'm so sick of coloring out of the lines, then having to go back and erase

Haha, yes, I hate that too.
The only downside is that you need to have a 'closed' lineart.
