so really just fan art with the trademarked characters?

I'm not telling you not to do adoptables of trademarked merchandise (just think of all the MLP adoptables out there), I'm just expressing a personal opinion, that I wouldn't do adoptables of trademarked merchandise because I don't feel comfortable in selling them. I've made my own Bleach OCs back in the day and I still have them, but they're for personal use, so I never gained anything from them.

Okay so I have like no idea how this adoptable stuff works so I have some questions that are really dumb. Can an adoptable only be sold once, or can more than one person purchase that adoptable? What's even the point of adopting? Like what do you do with it once you have adopted it? How do you give the person the adoptable after they've purchased it? How do you make sure that someone doesn't just download your adoptable without even asking or paying for it? And yeah I think that's basically it. I'm new to deviantart by the way, so sorry if these questions are like really poopy! Thanks!

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Whatdoesntmatter [2014-02-19 11:11:24 +0000 UTC]

Ok, let's go by order:

- An adoptable can be sold only to one person (since it's a character, it wouldn't be nice for two people to have the same one), the thing you can do is use the same base/lineart to create different adopts with different designs. If you allow re-sale, the adopt can be re-sold, but the owner is always one.

- For what's an adopt for, I've written an introductory Journal about it: karijn-s-basement.deviantart.cโ€ฆ

- You 'give' the adoptable by adding the name of the adopter in the description and closing the adopt. If you're offering a high resolution/unwatermarked version, you should upload it on sta.sh and give the buyer the link via private note. Or you could ask for their mail address and mail it to them, but sta.sh is usually easier. Or use the Purchase Button.

- If you use a Purchase Button, the HR version cannot be downloaded without paying. And the 'not stealing stuff' is mainly up to the decency of people. As long as you have a watermark on your adoptable, the design can be traced back to you. Usually thieves are not very smart and just pick different adopt with different stiles so they're easy to spot. In case of an out-site theft, if there's a watermark on, people will look for the original artist (thieves don't steal ugly designs, and if a design is nice, other people will want to know who the artist is as to maybe ask them for a commission) and you'll be noted pretty soon.

I think I answered everything, if I missed something, let me know.

How do you transfer an outline so you can make the design? Doย I have to have a drawing program?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to applecorpses [2014-01-03 16:15:15 +0000 UTC]

You don't need a program to save an outline file, the download will work anyway and I guess you can open Word Office, copy the outline there and then print it, if you want to go traditional.

But if you want to be faster (and possibly neater), a drawing program is definitely your best bet. If you don't want to pay for one, GIMP is a layer-supporting, free software that is pretty easy to download and use.

Hope I managed to help.

but how do I put the outline on the drawing program? sorry if I'm a bother I just really want to learn ย

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to applecorpses [2014-01-03 17:20:22 +0000 UTC]

You save the outline on your PC (.png or .psd formats are better than .jpeg because they keep transparency) and then open the program. After that, you go to the File > open directory and open the outline from the folder where you saved it.

It means that somebody did the first fanart to try and adopt it, but then stopped. When I asked a few months later if they were still interested in completing the challenge, they said yes but I haven't heard from then since. So I'll have to go ask them again and make a decision.

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Blue-squids [2013-09-07 09:52:05 +0000 UTC]

You don't need to give them anything, as long as you keep the deviation online, they can favourite and save that. If you offer a high resolution version, you might want to send it by e-mail or just upload it on sta.sh.

Hi there, if you want to advertise your adoptables, I suggest submitting them to groups or making a forum thread, not use other people's deviations for your advertising purposes without even commenting on them.

Hello, I'm a starting artist and want to develop my skills, do you have any tutorial recommendation for making such lineart? I've tried to search in dA, but no result that close to such lineart in this tutorial

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to blueatlantean [2013-04-07 11:56:34 +0000 UTC]

No, not really. รฉ_รจ
I can tell you that the best digital linearts are often done with tablets (so, pen pressure). In the specific case, I use Paint Tool SAI's default Pen tool with just 'Size' checked for pressure.

I'm afraid I can't help you more.

fingerpaint888 In reply to ??? [2012-12-25 06:55:35 +0000 UTC]

I have a question. When you have chosen to sell an adoptable to a chosen person how do transactions work. Do you just tell the person they have the rights and repost it. Then they give their points/money. I have no clue what happens because I have never done it before. Also, is traditional work acceptable for adoptabled?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to fingerpaint888 [2012-12-25 17:22:00 +0000 UTC]

Usually it goes like this:

- Person claims the adoptable
- Artist confirms that the adoptable is open and asks for payment
- Person sends payment and artist changes the status of the adoptable to 'owned/closed'

After the payment is sent, the person has bought the character and can use/draw it. Re-posting with credit is generally allowed (I have yet to see someone who forbids it).

And yes, traditional work can be used for adoptables, but in that case, you might want to have a good scanner or edit it slightly with a program... The basic idea is that what looks better, sells faster, so having a good image of your traditional work is essential.

So then, if I were to sell one of my characters, I would still be able to use it, but so would they...?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to MissStrix [2013-08-17 09:25:23 +0000 UTC]

It's not exactly like that... If you were to sell one of your characters, it wouldn't be your character anymore. You'd still be able to draw them (everyone appreciates fanart of their characters, I'm pretty sure the new owner wouldn't say no to art), but you couldn't use them however you wanted anymore.

If you want, the original deviant trying for them is ~tori-no-uta . They have drawn just one fanart of RA, but if you want to ask them about doing the other two fanarts and adopting him yourself, I think they won't kill you for asking.

;w; I cant use tablet, so i mostly do all my linearts by mouse, which ends up lineart that's thickness doesnt change. Does it mean my lines are not as good as ones with thickness variability? Drawing them with mouse makes them really smooth and even, though.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to omenaapple [2012-12-09 15:29:52 +0000 UTC]

A varied thickness is more dynamic and more eye-catching, and that's the only reason why I consider it more desirable than a constant thickness. I've checked your linearts and I think they're quite good, I was a bit surprised at the smoothness. Do you use vectors?

There's an option in SAI that allows you to make the lineart with vectors and then change the thickness of the line, which is a great solution for mouse users. PS has this option too, but I always found it a bit too complicated for my tastes.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

omenaapple In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2012-12-09 15:38:29 +0000 UTC]

Vectors? Not really, I use mostly Paint.NET for my drawings and coloring :3 Though, if im doing a large lineart commission to someone, i sometimes make it go trough Vector Magic so it'll be even smoother.
I guess my secret for drawing with mouse is not the brush tool, but the line tool. It makes really smooth lines <3
I tried Sai, but after i tried up the trial version, it tells me to pay for it ): I tried re-downloading a free version from internet, but it doesnt work. Still says it's expired. :/

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to omenaapple [2012-12-09 20:10:32 +0000 UTC]

When I had no tablet, I kind of hated the mouse and always did everything traditional, both lines and colours, so I admire a lot the people who use the mouse, they must be the saints of patience.
