Description Apparently dA randomly changed this deviation's format from 'image' to 'text'. Until I figure out how to fix this, please follow the link:

There's the link to the bigger version under the image. Unfortunately dA changed the deviation format from 'image' to 'text' and I don't know how to turn it back without deleting everything. T_T

I'm sorry, this might be an old tutorial, but the last part just kills me xD
"What was it in its previous life?" "A dog. Wanna buy?"

This is awesome, I was really looking to start doing adoptables so this is a huge help c:

Haha, I actually had that conversation with another adoptable seller.
Not exactly worded like that but it came close.

You're welcome to help yourself to my other Journals if you want, and good luck with your adoptables.

How do you use lineart? o3o

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to StarTheNinja [2012-08-23 17:20:18 +0000 UTC]

You open it with an art program and colour it.

._. oh....i feel so stupid, but whats an art program?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to StarTheNinja [2012-08-23 18:41:14 +0000 UTC]

A program to make art. Like Photoshop, Paint Tool SAI...
The basic 'Paint' every PC that runs on Windows has is probably the first art program to have been made.

Um... How would you... uh... (gotta think of how to say this) um... How would you price it for points not money, or like how do you put a price on it, do you know what I mean, cause I'm having a hard time explaining?

Here's the link to the 'Pricing' Journal. Unfortunately, it's very hard to decide an actual number next to the price... My best suggestion is to check dA for some adoptables that are similar to yours for style/design/quality and look at the prices. They should be all about the same price range, and that's the price that is probably the right one to sell your creations.

We could talk at lenght about pricing based on the drawing/designing effort, but thing is, no one would pay a high price for [link] this, even if you spent ten hours on it.

:I i want to know if it is ok to use the same poses as other artist do on their adoptables since I have seen my share of same poses like almost traced :I

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Koneko-Hoshi [2012-08-10 13:29:39 +0000 UTC]

Well, a front view is a front view, not much variation here, but if the style is similar you can get the impression of a traced/stolen base. As long as you don't trace anything, I think you'll be fine.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Koneko-Hoshi In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2012-08-10 18:01:24 +0000 UTC]

cool I just wanted to know since I have seen so many adoptables with the same poses but different artists.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

umbbe In reply to ??? [2012-08-02 01:04:11 +0000 UTC]

I'd like to note also that charging 20$ for adoptables is...
Let's just say that 20$ is a lot of money for a character design you didn't really have any part in making.

Do you think it would be a good point to mention in the tut? <:V

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to umbbe [2012-08-05 09:42:29 +0000 UTC]

Pricing is something that is for the artist to decide and the buyer to accept... I've seen pre-set auctions going over $100, with a good artist and a nice design, so doing price suggestions without cosidering the art quality, the design and the artist's fame is a bit hard.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

umbbe In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2012-08-05 10:05:07 +0000 UTC]

Well, presuming the artist is a newbie, it would be a good idea to caution against outrageous prices, still.
I can't really justify a 100$ price, unless the artist was unbelievably good (and by that point you probably would be paying more for the art than the design.)

I guess Im just bitter since I wouldn't even think of selling things over anything but maybe a dollar. :c

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to umbbe [2012-08-06 15:22:41 +0000 UTC]

Newbie in the adoptables sense or the art sense? Because I've seen old artists start up with some adoptables that were fairly priced. For the artist, I mean.

And I've seen your gallery, I liked a lot both the wivern designs and the pokΓ©mon redesigns. If you ever start and Adoptables business, I think you'd earn well. Well, not enough to pay the rent, but they're enough for some extra movie nights.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

umbbe In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2012-08-06 15:47:11 +0000 UTC]

I think in both senses, but especially in the art sense? ;w; A dozen copies of a single lineart might not be the most likely candidate for +20$ price tag?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to umbbe [2012-08-06 21:33:13 +0000 UTC]

I have seen some species around that use the same lineart and go for about $8-12 each... Perhaps don't post them all in the same deviation, this way it becomes more 'boutique' than 'walmart'.

You should consider Furaffinity too if you want to start with adoptables.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

umbbe In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2012-08-06 21:48:38 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps... Though it kind of feels unfair for the customer that they are given an illusion the design is more unique than it actually is. People tend to pay more for individual artists to support them, even if they are being ripped off. *shrug*

My main problem with starting to sell them myself is that I can't use paypal and I have no use for da points. Hum...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to umbbe [2012-08-06 22:07:04 +0000 UTC]

I think that a buyer should at least check out the artist's whole gallery before buying something (this is the first rule to avoid art thieves and you might discover something more interesting than what you first looked at) and it's not really a rip-off... You have set the standard of the species. Plus, creating a base lets you lower the price a bit because you save time on the lineart and the shadows.

Can't use paypal because of your age or because of no bank account? Ask-a-parent-to-do-an-account is the most used solution for the first one, and I use a rechargable debit card because I don't have a bank account either... I don't know what kind of options you have in your country.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

umbbe In reply to Karijn-s-Basement [2012-08-06 22:16:10 +0000 UTC]

But then again, the artist sets the price, so people who don't know better will pay that price.
(there was a case of some girl stealing prints from her dad's workplace and selling those prints for 20€ per comic because of "printing fees" :l)

Can't use because Im not comfortable with the idea to call them and speak in english. (I detached my credit card multiple times from their service due to trust issues, so I would have to call them.)
Its kind of expensive too.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to umbbe [2012-08-07 21:16:14 +0000 UTC]

...those fees sure are high.

I didn't know there was a limit to how many times you can connect/disconnect a card... I had to change mine once because the previous one got ruined, but I don't think it's the same. The fees are quite annoying, especially for small sums because of the base fee, but it's the most common way of sending money online these days, so I've had to adapt.

Hey, I've got a question. How do you change the thickness of the lines? (in Paint tool Sai, or Gimp) I've got a Tablett (Aiptek Slim Tablet 600U Premium) but it doesn't work although. I'm really Sorry If I'm bothering you. (btw, I'm german, I apologize for my English) Oh and, I love your Tutorials~ They're so helpful (:

You're not bothering me at all, but I'm not going to be much help here... I have SAI but I use a Wacom. SAI recognized the pressure as soon as I plugged in the tablet, Photoshop has a box to check in the Brush settings. Have you tried looking at the installed programs if there's a window for the tablet settings?

Wait, I tinkered with SAI a little bit, check
Help/Config (O) > Options > Tablet
My settings are Minimum Pressure = 0 and 'Pen' is checked instead of Mouse, hope this helps.
