Haha, that's what happened with my Aazon, Babylon, Adrian... Most of my OCs are adoptables that I couldn't let go.
I usually set a line when I know I won't be able to draw everyone at least once... Hence why I rarely adopt creatures.

Hm, interesting. Though the hugest question with these that I have is...
How exactly do adoptables work? XD;;; As in, how does the selling process go? Does a person buy and just get... a new character of their own or something?
Hopefully that isn't a ridiculous question.

I partly answer it HERE in the second Q&A.
The selling process is pretty straightforward, you ask the artist and if they tell you that you can adopt the character, then you send the payment. Some purchasers try to haggle on the price but not all artists are open to change prices. Checking the rules on the description is always a good way to know whether your haggle will be successful or not.
If you ask you might get the artist permission to repost the art (obviously you must give credit because you didn't draw it yourself), but the thing you buy is the character, which is the combo of species+design. Both species and design can be used again by the artist, but not together, because that particular combination is yours only.
Or course, if you adopt something like the 'solid black cat' you can't exactly claim all the rights to the character because dA has black cats everywhere. You don't even need to buy it, you could simply create a black cat character by yourself.

Pfffheheheh. Yeah, black cats. I mean, I think I've even seen people use characters that aren't their own (Pokemon, for example, I believe). What's up with them? Seems kind of fishy, but I suppose said adoptables usually are free?

Generally yes, but I have seen some pokemon designs being sold for real money too, and I'm not talking about fakemons. I believe they fall in the same category as doujinshi... You're earning money from someone else's characters.
