wow really? i do that all the time at work and with all my girly friends. I didnt know it bothered women to call them ma'am. I guess its like Sir...it used to bother me...but its better then "hey bro", so i like it now. Well what would be an acceptable form of greeting or attention grabbing. Besides "hey, hey, hey you, hey hey"

I live in the south, and I assure you, even when speaking to the 3 year old girls that ran around the daycare center I worked at for awhile, male people tend to refer to those girls as 'miss' or 'ma'am.' In the south, 'Madam' actually implies someone much older than a mere 'ma'am' does. Whoever they were, you ought to take it as intended, they were just trying to be respectful.
