Description
Monster design based on the bird of the same name. This nighthawk, unlike its real life counterpart, doesn't do much flying. However he's still a stealthy nocturnal hunter. He just loves bursting out of the undergrowth upon unsuspecting prey.Related content

I can imagine how paranoid someone would get if they had this guy as a pet.

I very like this one. And I don't know why, but I especially like the realism of the tongue.

just when I thought it was safe to go back in the woods. oh well, at least they don't jump down from trees.

I love this concept.
Your pencil lines and shading are exquisite, not to mention the anatomy and overall cool factor of the Nighthawk. Definitely a beast that can stand with best of them.
Have you decided upon a size for the Nighthawk?

Thanks!
I'd wager the Nighthawk's about the size of a grizzly bear.

Lovely creature! Though if it doesn't fly... wouldn't the wings just use a lot of extra energy to supply with blood and nutrients?

The wings are used in place of forelimbs, and for fighting and hunting. The leathery feather-like planes that extend from them are leftover from a time when they very well may have flown. For now, they serve other purposes, such as for communication and mating displays. I can also imagine them serving some heat regulatory function, as well as the creatures spreading their wing leather out to extend their already long leaps.

I imagine that would be similar to how elephants use their ears to regulate body temperature. Also, can they control the colour of the leathery "wings" for mating/communication purposes?
