Description
I get asked a lot how I do my textures so here's a small tutorial on how I did this piece. It was really very simple to do and has very few layers.~HanameHime was nice enough to let me use her photo.
Textures are by ~AutumnsGoddess-stox =resurgere stock.xchng
If you have any questions I'll be happy to try and answer them for you, most importantly have fun!

I'm new to Photoshop, I don't even have a nice version (its 2.0) and I can't figure out how to make my texture a layer. Say I have a texture that I like from the web and I've saved it to my pictures. Now, how do I add it as a layer to the picture I want texture on?

kayceeus In reply to Lyndzie [2007-10-21 21:06:59 +0000 UTC]
Okay you have the two files open, the texture and the file you want to put the texture into. All you need to do is put your move tool (the arrow at the top of your toolbox) on the texture and drag it over to the file, it will create it's own layer. After that go through the different modes to see which one you like best, I usually use soft light or overlay.
Another way to do it would be to click on your texture file and go to Select>all. Then click on your other file and Edit>aste.
I hope I made these directions easy enough for you to understand it's so much easier to show someone in person! If you need more help let me know.

Another DA member suggested I followed your tutorial, when I "complained" my beginer's manip was too plain realistic. So I tried to read through this tutorial of yours. I understood most part, but I was stuck at the part where you said you "added another layer and brightened the lips up a little..." It could be plain simple for other digital artists. But since I'm a novice... what is inside that layer? a cut out lips of the girl? And how did you do it? Sorry for my maybe stupid question to you.

kayceeus In reply to milbisous [2007-07-22 14:26:49 +0000 UTC]
I'm so sorry it was hard for you to understand I especially wanted to make it easy for a novice. I brightened up the lips by adding a blank layer and with the mode on color I just painted in the lips with a color I liked better.
I hope this clears it up for you, if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Thank you for answering my stupid question, but here comes another one just to have a better understanding. So you have a blank layer, set at Color mode, you paint on the lips of the background right beneath that blank layer? I'm trying to self teach myself by reading tutorials and at times, I do not understand since I do not have a good foundation in photoshop. You're kind for sharing with people like me your knowledge, that's mighty unselfish

kayceeus In reply to milbisous [2007-07-22 16:07:17 +0000 UTC]
The blank layer is on top of the original lips, the background, you set that blank layer to color mode before you do any painting and then paint the lips in. If you look at my tutorial the lips are on layer 6, that might give you a better idea. I like to use blank layers for things like this because I can delete them if I want without messing up the original piece, plus you can try different modes and opacities.
BTW there are no stupid questions, how else are you going to learn if you don't ask?
If you have an adult ed. or college program in your area I'd recommend checking to see if they offer a Photoshop class, it really helps to get at least the basics down.

Thank you for making me understand fully now. I did take an intensive Photoshop class some 4 summers ago, at a community college. The class was 5 hours a day, 4days a week for 5 weeks and I was absent... 2 weeks because of my son's college functions across the country. My teacher predicted I would fail because of my absence. But since I only audited the class, I got no grades and just the botchy basic knowledge My interest in photomanips only started just a month ago when one friend's photomanip suddenly inspired me. Thank you very much for your patience, I appreciate it

Well I can understand you not remembering, I had a hard time not forgetting everything I learned between semesters much less four years!! I'd come back, open the program and think, "OK now what goes where?"
Anytime I can be of help just let me know.

By the way, I see doll like images in stock galleries. Are they for manipulators to dress them up and paint their faces and body parts as close as possible to real humans?

kayceeus In reply to milbisous [2007-07-23 15:45:48 +0000 UTC]
They could certainly use dolls for those purposes. I've done a couple of pieces using dolls, my Raggedy Ann piece was such a blast to do!

The first time I took that PS class, I went crazy, placing people in different countries. That was a blast until I returned from my absence and I was frustrated, not able to catch up with more advanced assignments. I know I missed a whole bunch of info due to my absence. It was so funny, I did not know the teacher would zoom in to...find mistakes, so in some people cut outs I had, nose tips were chopped off and mouths with missing lips etc... I was rushing to complete mandatory homeworks
