In honour of DeviantArt's birthday I'm joining in with the DeviantArtist Questionnaire! You can join in too. The questions are listed at the bottom of my questionnaire.
- How long have you been on DeviantArt?
I've been on DeviantArt for eleven years now. I joined in 2004 but became properly active in 2005. It's just a number by wow has it flown by. The years have merged and blurred and I can't believe it's been this long. Offline I've not been part of anything for as long as this...other than education
- What does your username mean?
It's my nickname ( Kaz which is short of Katy) and the first letter of my surname. I don't know how it came about though, just sort of happened. I don't get called Kaz in real life, mostly Katy, Kate or Kathryn courtesy of TouchedD who has 'full named' me since the day we met.
- Describe yourself in three words.
Loyal, Forgetful, Creative. I used to have this amazing memory especially in my early CV days on DeviantArt and I was able to retain, do, promote, encourage and whatever else without a second thought. I now have a really highly strung job which takes up all available capacity in my memory and takes most of my ability to appear organised online, away.
- Are you left or right handed?
Right handed when writing, eating, doing most things but both handed when playing sports. No idea why!
- What was your first deviation?
You wont win your war....London- We are still standingA day that wont be forgotten,
The whole country has been stilled,
There is emptiness so eerie,
And a space thats unfulfilled.Theyve tried to slice our moral,
They tried to instil fear,
But instead they made us stronger,
And fight for what is dear.We are a Kingdom of survivors,
Just one heart, that shares a tear,
We live to serve the memory
And we wont give in to fear.Brothers, sisters cousins,
We lost family and friends,
But we have made a choice to not forget,
Their lives and tragic ends.We had our share of troubles,
But we put them all aside,
Because today we became equals,
And defended ourselves with p...
I was on DeviantArt before 2005, but I lurked. I was driven to write and create when the London Bombings happened in 2005 (July) and I was on the next train going into London. I had overslept otherwise I would have been on the tube that was directly hit, and probably not alive today. The chaos, stress and memories drove me to write - and brought me to DeviantArt. I sent the poem to radio stations, newspapers, and the mayor of London got hold of it and wrote to me personally about it. It was quite poignant.
- What is your favourite type of art to create?
I love writing - I'm a photographer these days, and I love that too. But I feel so proud when I can write something that I would want to read, and can then share it with the community. It sounds vain but something I love doing is reading through my old deviations from time to time and getting lost in the words. At one point I ran out of books to read (awful I know) and so I decided to write what I would want to read and then it just stemmed from there.
- If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
I'd love to be able to be a master at painting, water-colour, oils, whatever. I'd love to be able to do it. I've dabbled but nothing major. My Grandad is an amazing painter, and inspires me to create and always has. When I was young and stayed on the Island where he lived, we painted pebbles from the beach and glued them together to make ducks .
- What was your first favourite?
- What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?
Photography definitely. Photography is easy to view, a photo can tell so much but one glance can give an impression. These days I'm all about the things that are easy to digest, but I occasionally delve into literature when I know I can give it the time it deserves.
- Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
There are so many! For literature I would choose LiliWrites - she has inspired me from the moment I stumbled upon her gallery. For Photography I would choose Timothy-Sim . His work is just amazing but not only that, he's an awesome dude who is willing to share and teach what he knows to others.
- If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?
I'd love to meet 3wyl - firstly so I can photograph her wedding but secondly because I think we'd have tons to talk about. Then I'd like to meet Mrs-Durden because we talk so much online and it would just be easier to be face to face - and also hosagu to check if he's as super bouncy and enthusiastic in real life as he is in writing
There are loads more I'd love to meet so don't be offended if you're not here! (blame the memory...)
- How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?
kinipelahh taught me how to adjust the white balance/exposure in skies. It was a tiny tip that she probably forgot she told me about by now but it changed how I edited my photographs, made me learn more and ultimately allowed me to expand my work and professional photography. moonbeam13 has impacted my life because here I am, volunteering in the photography galleries. All those years ago she took my gentle persuasion to take on Abstract and Surreal and ever since, being a member of the volunteer team has given me opportunities, and highlighted artworks that have changed my life. Many others have impacted me, with what they've written or images they have shared. Far too many to name them all. Mrs-Durden keeps me on track and grounded in the moment, she reminds me of stuff I forget and pokes me appropriately now and then. 3wyl - my retired partner in crime in the Photography galleries, we just thought of so much together from groups to contests to projects and together we expanded and embarked on wonderful DA things. Well that's what I think anyway.
- What are your preferred tools to create art?
Sony D-SLR, tripod and a handful of lenses. UV filter of course and occasionally some props (fishing wire, marbles, orbs for reflection) - and a dog for the long walks!
- What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?
Outside, in a beautiful landscape or in a rainstorm, watching a lightning show or at a public event, by the sea or sitting by a lake - everywhere, the world is my muse. My most inspirational place of all time is the Isle of Wight. You can read more about it in DeviantArt Road Trip: Isle of Wight.
- What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?
Skype calls with kinipelahh , MyntKat , PurpelBlur , Exillior and more - they were hilarious. I can't pinpoint any one moment or one thing, I just remember the insane feelings of laughter

Wow; a poem about the London bombings was your first deviation?! Your poem was very good, I'm very glad you missed that train.
I also can't believe you're younger than me (and you got a house first hehe)! I would have been in Year 13 in 2005. I don't really remember the news, I do remember when 9/11 broke out - I was 14 then.
My memory worsens as I get older, I used to remember tonnes of things, now I can barely remember what day it is (something I used to berate my own mother about!)

Thank you yeah I think it was my first, I don't remember posting or deleting anything else before that but it might have been possible
It's the first in my gallery anyway
Really? I'm hardly younger than anyone these days feel olllllld! I never thought I'd have a house by now, but there was (still is) a scheme to get local people who are first time buyers onto the housing ladder. (I can note you about it if you like!) And we managed to do it via that. It wasnt the pesky help to buy government loan scheme either
.
My memory is awful these days. There's just too much for it to cope with. Post it notes EVERYWHERE. I know the feeling though, I used to get cross with people about it

I know the feeling about being older than everyone else on here. Thankfully the Photography community is full of people of all shapes and ages!
That sounds like a good scheme. I thought it would be another 5 years before we'd have a deposit (making us well into our 30's), but my in-laws offered to help us with the deposit. Barclays had a "Helpful Start" scheme which we went with. We moved into our new home in Feb, only just starting to feel settled!
I find if I need to remember something, as long as I've written it down somewhere I will generally remember it (if it's typed I won't!).

Oooo helpful start sounds interesting! It's great when family help out, we had help too so that we could get some extras when it was built February!
Bet it feels amazing! Is it a new home?

It is - basically we place a 5% deposit, and an additional 10% gets placed in a 1.5% savings account for 3 years. If we default within that time, the bank gets that money, otherwise it goes back to the parents with the interest. It's basically a guarantor thing. Father in Law was happy to do that, as he said with that amount he wasn't going to get a better rate on savings elsewhere!
To be honest I've only really started to settle in, it took so long getting the seller to complete the paperwork correctly, and actually sell the darn thing. We also had the stress of our rental house being up for sale, and then getting notice to leave. I've also been crazy busy at work too. I think my stress levels are only just returning to normal! It's an ex-council house from the 50's, nice solid construction, but I think it must have been built before the standard council house shapes came in as it is a very odd (but charming) design. One example is two chimney breasts instead of one - the rest of the (admittedly odd) street have one chimney. We suspect it was supposed to be two houses, but the builders decided to leave it as one at the end of the terrace.
What's your's like? I know it's a new build.

That sounds like a fantastic deal I didn't realise that was possible. It's scary having all the bills but I always said once we got the house and started paying, we would do anything we could to keep it regardless of what happens in life
Two chimney breasts! That's crazy , but it sounds lovely. I love established houses, there's still a lot you can do with them and they have character
. We have a chimney - the whole estate does - and they are fake!
it's really weird but for some reason the builder wanted all the houses to have a chimney. I've heard people have problems with them leaking so it seems more trouble than it's worth but there must be a reason for it. Ours is nice, two bedrooms and light and airy, feels bigger than it is

We didn't either - it's not well marketed. The in-laws offered us some help, we had no idea where to start so we just went to my bank. They either wanted 15% deposit, or this scheme. We did have to pay a fee for it though.
It is scary seeing how much goes out - it's a little more than when we were renting; but if we were to rent again it will be about the same price. Then theirs all the insurances, having to do repairs, boiler service etc etc which become visible! But yes - we're of the same opinion!
They probably wanted to keep it in character of the surrounding area? A lot of new builds copy older houses - it is daft to go with chimneys unless you're gonna use it. It's a shame they copy as it's fun to try and work out what era built what - now we're going to end up with samey buildings.
Very nice!

Hi, I was just browsing through the questionnaires as I found yours
You are definitely the member for the longest time out of all the Questionnaires I've read so far! And it's great to meet some people who are into writing. I feel this gets too much underrated on DA (no boobs or cats involved).
Have a nice day

Your story about your first deviation is insane. It's so scary and surreal to imagine what could have been.
Also, "I now have a really highly strung job which takes up all available capacity in my memory" - this. 150% this. My short term memory is nothing like it used to be.
