Resolution of a camera depends not only on the number pixels, but also very much on the the resolution of the lens. This picture was taken by an Olympus E-30 (~13 megapixel) and a Zuiko Digital 50-200mm SWD. In my opinion Olympus produces the best DSLR zoom lenses at the market.

I think that the colors are more or less accurate, but the special atmosphere is caused by the light smoothing from the HDR algorithm.
