Description This is the story of three mice, James, Tony and Carl, who sailed to Australia one a ship named “Shotokan”, and made their fortune in the gold fields.  Now they are at the docks, looking for a ship to take them back to England.

James had been sent to find a suitable ship whilst the other two guarded the gold.  After half an hour James came running back, his little whiskers quivering with excitement.

“The Shotokan is here!” he cried, “and it's sailing for England tonight, I’ve already seen Amy and the others and they said its fine for us to go aboard!”

Amy, if you remember, is the little girl mouse who knocked Tony out in the mini-mouse karate tournament last time they were all together.  Well, of course the other two were very excited and, grabbing their sacks of gold they ran carefully through the busy dock till they reached the ship.
Amy, and some of the other mice, including Naomi, Rob and Dave, who didn’t get mentioned in the last story, were waiting at the ship to meet them.

“Hi guys,” Dave greeted them, “it’s great to see you all again.  Come aboard and I’ll show you where you can put your stuff.”

Dave was such a terribly efficient little mouse, always busy organising things, and he always seemed to know what to do. So the three little karate mice settled in and, after supper (cheese of course) they went up on the main deck to watch as the ship pulled away from the dock, soon they could no longer see the land and were sailing through a seemingly endless sea. Seven days after setting sail, Amy, Tony and Naomi were in the galley, begging the cook for some cheese, when somebody up on deck shouted “Ship on the portside!” And then there was lots of noise, men running up onto the deck and more shouting.

“What’s happening?” Tony asked Amy,
“I’m not sure,” she replied,
“we don’t often meet ships out here, it’s a very lonely part of the ocean.”

The mice ran up on deck to see what was happening, and met up with the other mice, standing on a crate near the railing, where they were well out of the way of all the running feet.

“It’s a pirate ship!” said Rob,
“we can see the skull and crossbones flag flying.  They call it the `Jolly Roger’, though I don’t see anything jolly about it.”

So it seemed the three little karate mice would be having more adventure after all, but they didn’t seem upset by that prospect!  Carl seemed especially excited,
“I’ve always wanted to meet a pirate!” he squeaked
“This could be my chance!”

But it turned out not to be as exciting as Carl had hoped… the pirate ship came closer and closer, and, even before they knew it was going to happen, all the pirates jumped aboard!
The crew fought like heroes to stop them, but they were outnumbered!  In less than an hour all the crew were tied up and the captain of the pirate ship came aboard.

“Alright lads!” he called to his band of pirates,
“get them opals up and onto `Satan’s Compass’.”  This being the name of the pirates’ ship of course.

The mice stood behind the crate watching all this in horror, then, suddenly James, Rob and Tony all felt a sharp poke in their backs! Turning round they came face to face with a band of six pirate mice, all decked out in eye patches, and with their little cutlasses drawn.
One of the pirate mice even had a wooden leg, which James couldn’t stop staring at.

“Find me leg interesting do yer?” growled the little pirate
“wotchit or I’ll teach you a lesson.”
The mouse captain stepped forward and informed the mice they were being taken hostage.  They were taken aboard Satan’s Compass and locked in a box in the hold.  Looking through a small hole in the wood, the karate mice could see the pirate mice doing a little war dance.
Then Carl gave an indignant shriek,  “look!  That’s our gold they’ve got there!”  And sure enough three mice came into view carrying the sacks of gold.  But there was nothing the little karate mice could do!

It wasn’t much fun being kept prisoner in a small wooden box, the pirate mice gave them only the stalest lumps of cheese to eat, and plain water to drink.  James, of course, complained very loudly over this and got a poke in the stomach with one of the cutlasses.
The poor mice had no idea how long they had been sailing for because they could not see the sky.  They had no way of knowing if it was night or day, and began to grow quite depressed.

“I wonder what happened to the crew,” said Dave
“I miss them, especially the cook, he always gave us fresh cheese, and bread.”

One day, the ship dropped anchor in a cove, a short way off the shore of what appeared to be a deserted island.  The pirate mice came into the hold and tied the little mice’s hands behind their backs.
“We’re goin’ for a little trip,” growled the old mouse with the wooden leg
“and not all of us are gonna be coming back, hahaha!”
It turned out that the mice were to be dumped on the island, this cheered them up because they were sick of being stuck in the hold and, once on the island, having managed to free their hands, they danced in circles on the sand.

“Look!” cried Amy, “there are people over there!”

The other mice looked where she was pointing, sure enough, a short way up the beach, sitting in the shade of a large palm tree, sat three men.

“I know those men,” said Rob, “at least, I’m quite sure that one of them is the cook.  I wonder where the rest of the crew are.”

That mystery was soon solved because Naomi, who knew the cook best, went to speak to him.  It turned out that once the opals had been moved onto Satan’s Compass the pirates had become careless and foolish. The crew of the Shotokan had turned on them and another big fight occurred (“I’m sorry I missed that,” said Carl), several pirates were injured and they had to flee for their lives. Unfortunately, they managed to recapture the cook and two of the younger crew members as none of them were greatly skilled at fighting (“I’d teach them to pick on young lads!” squeaked Carl). But what were they to do now? Three men and seven mice stranded on a desert island!  Well, there was nothing they could do, except hunt, gather fruit, and build sandcastles.
This was fine for the first few weeks, but the three little karate mice began to grow restless.
“I want to go into the middle of the island and see what I can find there,” said Tony.

And so they went into the middle of the island, and what they found there was incredible!

Ooooh it's getting good! Can't wait to read part 3! Just as brilliant as last time!

There are a few theories regarding the origins of the 'Jolly Roger'.
- One is that it came from the red flag called the 'Jolie Rouge', literally meaning jolly red, which was flown by privateers and symbolised the intention to kill all. The jolie rouge was feared more than the black standard, but it soon became intertwined.
- Another, also featuring the jolie rouge, is that Catholics fighting on the sea would fly the jolie rouge, which was also used in the crusades.
- Another is that it is a reference to the notorious Arabian pirate Ali Raja.
- The final theory is that it came simply from the name Roger, which meant vagabond; the Devil was sometimmes referred to as Old Roger.

Indeed. Just that Amy was sure right when she said it's not jolly, and I thought I'd give the origins...
