Working on this for a project in my heads, hands and feet class. Id say Im about 45% done but it just isnt coming together. Something about the composition just isnt working for me :/ I wanted it to have this backlit sinister feel but on a scale of 1-10 its like a 4 in sinister lol. Any advice or critique would be appreciated!Related content

Hmmmm I really like the color scheme, maybe the composition would benefit from scooting the center of focus more off to the side. The composition now is very centralized and you do have a lot of deep shadows now, but how about some more dark shadows and brighter lights. The harsher the contrast the stronger a piece can be. These are just some ideas, I'm not too sure if they would help any at all. I think the colors are working well right now...maybe a little bit of green...like a sickly green. Sorry I'm ranting, uh I hope maybe I helped a little.

oooo just read the comment above, good advice. Proportion and sizing could mean everything. I was just thinking of trying to work with what you have though, without starting over.

Haha I understand that feeling all too well. It happens to the best of us, maybe try again in a few weeks, right?

Part of the problem is the flat staging. Flat staging tends to be more useful for humour, depth adds drama. The other part is the body language. The body language doesn't seem furtive or sinister, it's like we caught her mid-conversation. She's fairly open, unguarded, distracted, low down so in a position of less power, etc. etc. For sinister you'd at least want a more closed, furtive pose. Since the body is hanging you probably can't get any looming going on.
You might want to flip the picture horizontally to change the impact of the corpse, too. It depends on what you want the surprise to be, the corpse or the woman's actions.

I definitely didnt take into consideration that her pose was so open. My first thoughts of this picture was thatI wanted her to be kind of manically clutching the cauldron but the pose is not conveying what I want it to. Im going to try the idea of flipping the canvas and as far as depth, I really didnt intend for it to look so flat, that was more of a mistake than a conscious decision. Any suggestions for how I can increase the depth of the image? This kind of critique is exactly what Im looking for, thanks!

Anyway, how you stage it depends largely on what you want to emphasize. I don't know the purpose of your assignment, so I can only really talk about what would make an effective, dramatic picture. Right now all the important stuff is on the same plane, and both figures are about the same size. One of them should be more dominant than the other, so I'd move one forward and one back. To add depth, avoid having mostly vertical and horizontal lines and add perspective and diagonals.
Do a few thumbnails, trying out one or the other figure closer to the camera, and a few different dramatic poses for the lady, then see which ones your friends or classmates think are most effective. They might have some suggestions too.

Thanks for those links, they were really interesting. I still have so much more to learn about composition! I didnt have much time left to turn it in so I only made a few changes, but Im going to be thinking about all of this then next time I start something!
