Description Oil on Canvas 36" X 48" I have been uploading different versions of this painting as it progressed: this is the final version. It still needs a bit of work and a better photograph taken, but this will do for now. I will move the previous versions to my scrapbook for those who still wish to compare them to the final work.

Thank you!....I think.Β  I guess I got tired of looking at it and changed it! Β  Well, at least I saved to photo of this version!
When I was working with the model, I was in a kind of bad place and I had no ideas of how to paint her.Β  So, I asked her how she wanted to be portrayed.Β  She said that when she was growing up she loved Ariel, the mermaid because she also had red hair.Β  So, she wanted to be portrayed as a mermaid.

And I really like it! And she is a real mermaid here! And Ariel probably loved all the girls ... Your mermaid is realistic and alive! I can only say bravo!Β

Can always paint another mermaid

True. Β I was thinking of changing this one back to a regular human girl...that way I could quit answering the question:"So....just how DID she get up there?" (I was claiming there was a chariot ramp off to the right just out of the picture)

Oh, Keith - I love it! the horse is great. I love the ... verdigris I think it is called? ... on the statue. The water is fantabulous! The texturing of the bricks of the platform is fantastic and realistic. In comparison, the horizon, sky, moon, and torso of mermaid seem a little flat - less 3-D and realistic - but soft and pleasant to look at.

Is that a good critique? I can't imagine being able to create such a beautiful painting - it takes a person of vision, talent, and perseverance. - Congratulations!

That is an excellent critique! Β Thank you for taking the time Β As it happens, the painting was intended for the model as a kind of partial payment for her time and trouble. Β But her boyfriend won't allow anything in the house that shows any naughty bits, so I get to keep the painting. Β She had wanted to be depicted as a mermaid, but since that is no longer absolutely required I have been thinking of getting rid of the fishy parts and turning her back into a human...either nude or with some kind of fun-to-paint dress(lots of drapery and kind of see-through) Β In the process, perhaps I can render her body a little better and no longer have to answer the question, "How DID she get up there?"Β

Thank you! Β I hope the model likes it, since it was meant to be given to her as part of her modeling fee. Β I think the horse is certainly an improvement over the original version!

She decided she didn't want the painting...her boyfriend didn't want his friends to see her breasts, so I am thinking of turning her back into a regular human and getting rid of the scales and fins.

Thank you! Β The water was the biggest headache in this piece...so I am relieved to hear that I got it right! Β That means I can put away the brushes and quit grumbling about "going back and getting it RIGHT this time" Β I was admiring your images as well. Β I faved a raven, as I am fond of ravens, but the ponies and the eye studies were excellent as well. Β I could never do pastel/charcoal without getting more on me than on the paper.

Thank you! The color on the horse sculpture didn't quite come out right in the photo...needs a glaze or varnish or something. Β
