MapMaker is a multi-platform (Windows, OS X and GNU/Linux) tool to assemble several images together to create a full map, annotate it and export the resulting image to a bitmap or vector image. It's licensed under GNU GPLv3 license and is available in English (native language of the application) and in French.

You can download latest versions on : dev.kervala.net/projects/mapma… and the full C++ source on : hg.kervala.net/mapmaker

It should be simple enough to understand how to use it, but you can see below the main features of MakMaker.

The main screen. You have a tool bar at the right, the different tools are :

  • Move/select tool : you can select and move the item you selected, details and new actions for selected item will be shown below.
  • Number tool : you need to insert an image before to add numbers. A number added to an image will be auto-incremented and linked to the image, so if you move the image all numbers will move together.
  • Symbol tool : like for numbers, you need to insert an image before to add a symbol and they'll be parented to the image.
  • Zoom tool : it allows to zoom in the main area by clicking on your left mouse button and zoom out if both your CTRL (or Apple) key and left mouse button are pressed.

Only one item can be selected once. All items can be deleted by pressing DELETE key on your keyboard, if you delete an image, all linked numbers and symbols will be deleted either.

In the Files menu, you can open or save a project (it'll save all images, symbols and numbers in a compact file) to reload it later. You also can export the final image in SVG or any supported format (PNG, JPEG, etc...). The background will be transparent excepted if your images are opaque. The final image size will fit all items.

When this tool is enabled, you'll need to click on an image to add a new number. If you click on an existing number it'll be selected even if you're not using the Select/move tool.

The position will be changed after clicking on validate button.

A new number will be automatically incremented. If you want to change it, you can directly edit its value and click on the validate button. A specific number can be used several times, so you can have two numbers 1 for example.

The recompute button allow to check all numbers from the start, if a number is missing, it'll decrease all following ones. It can be useful if you removed one or more numbers you don't need anymore.

The Increment button allows to increment the current number and all next ones, you need to increase the value else it won't do anything. It can be useful to add new numbers you missed and shift greater numbers.

Change font and change color buttons allow to change the font and color of all numbers (yes, all of them have the same appearance).

Like for numbers, this tool allows to add symbols on an image. You have a choice of 7 predefined symbols and the latest symbol you selected will be used by default for new symbols. You can change the global size or color of all symbols.

This is not really a tool, but images details when an image is selected. To add an image you have 2 choices : drag and drop any supported file on the main area (PNG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, SVG, etc...) or go to Items => Import images.... For the moment, you can't edit image name, but you change the image using the button. Bitmap files will use the same size, SVG files will use their size in millimeters and 96 dpi resolution, if the imported size if too large or small, please adjust it yourself before.

Since an image could be using the wrong colors, you have the possibility to replace ONE color by ONE other. Original foreground color is the color you want to replace and Final foreground color is the final replaced color you want to use. A simple case would be if you want to print the map and put the numbers in black and the map in grey while the original one is in black.
