Description
So i wanted to get creative again after not being able to due to lack of workspace. So i wanted to try some minimalistic stuff out, i recently sorted my Brushes and found a really great Brushset by *EraserX which can be found here: [link]A bit hard to control at the beginning, but the results are amazing when you figure out your rythm with them
Also i tried out the style i've heard and seen many other artists use, im not sure if it has a name but its the method in which everything is drawn in greyscale first and then colored via an overlay layer. It really works great actually, especially when doing depth in landscapes. Though its hard when most of the greyscale work consists of white and black, thus the great darkness of the cliffs. I need to work it out a little i gues
This was kind of a speedpainting for my conditions: only 4 hours
To the concept image itself, its a place of Zäa called Pinecore Ridge, this "path" would actually be half way to the top i gues. The bottom of the ridge consists of pines, thus the name. The aerea of the ridge used to be home to the Nofrygs, a race of huge birds who were the children of the Goddess of the Sky but were hunted into extinction in days of yore. Nowadays the area is territory to the Arnitoka, a gryphon kind race, which are the children of the Goddess of Lore.
The Arnitoka aren't a very friendly race, and would curse who ever they find has stepped into their territory, if not kill them at the very first sight. To reach the other side of the ridge, one must either face a 15-20 day journey around the ridge depending on the desired location, or take the fast trip of merely 1-2 days through the pass which can be seen here (quite a difference, aint it?). There's a chance that the Arnitoka won't spot people venturing through the path, but if they do, they're most certainly doomed.
There's one greater story of mine concerning Themeon the bard, father of all males in this piece: [link] who lead a caravan through the ridge. Many of the characters who had joined the caravan either died or got cursed. But i won't spoil too much here.
Also, the ridge is the only source of a powerfull herb in the northern part of Zäa, which is used for potions which only tarsujan alchemists can create. The potion is used to cure blindness and illnesses cursed by mothdust of giant moths. Since there are only 2 tarsujan alchemists left in all of Zäa, the knowledge of the existance and powers of the herbs was almost lost.
Gues thats all for now

I love the rough sketchy style you used to colour the rocks and the hilights and shading are perfect. I know I spend way longer than 4 hours on backgrounds. I suck too.
You composition looks well thought out and it's great to get the story behind the setting too. Wonderful picture.

This is gorgeous. I think the shading on the cliffs is fantastic, so much depth to it.

Good work on the composition, and the background is amazing. The story is pretty good too and adds to this piece.

I love the amount of detail you've put into this. How can you do something like this in only 4 hours? O.O

Well it was only a sketch, i started out using the same brush as for the details in very huge and painted some random strokes from black over grey to white until a shape appeared and then worked it out with a smaller brush. Thats the whole trickt actually I just let the piece draw itself

wow that looks really cool!! i love the contrast in the cliffs though. i think it adds a lot of drama to the scene. And when it's next to the peaceful sky and distant grounds, i feel like the person who is walking the path and wanting to continue foreword. nicely done
