Description
"Behold the power of the Chaos Emeralds!"I've been playing quite a bit of Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity lately. After finishing story mode, I had decided to do all 112 side missions of the game. Initially, I was going to Super rank at minimum so I could unlock the additional playable characters, but after thinking about it for a while, I decided to go all the way and get Extreme ranks for every mission. It helps I already had over half of them during my initial run through.
So after spending several hours getting the remaining Extreme ranks (the Babylon missions gave me some trouble), I finally did it. I've unlocked the Chaos Emerald gear and can now use Super Sonic whenever I want outside of Story Mode. Though his playstyle will take some getting used...
Basically, Sonic starts in his normal form and runs on the ground until you pick up some rings where he'll transform into his super form. He loses 1 ring every 4 seconds and he reverts back to normal if he runs out of rings. You know, typical stuff.
However, since the gimmick of the game is using gravity powers to your advantage during races and Super Sonic doesn't have a GP gauge like everyone else, you have to sacrifice your rings when attempting to use gravity powers, and they drain unbelievably fast! Not only that, but unlike the first Riders game where he could access all shortcuts, Super Sonic can only access power shortcuts and only when he's using the Super Sonic Boost, which kicks in automatically after you obtain 60 rings, drains you of 5 rings per second while its active and can't be turned off until you run out of rings.
Not to worry, since there are ways to make your life easier. Collecting 30 rings (40 for the second Ring Cap Up) allows you to increase your ring cap, which is normal at 100, by 25 for each Ring Cap Up you use, allowing you to get a 150 ring cap at max. But more importantly is the Magnetic Barrier, which can be used once you have 50 rings. Activating this gives you a permanent magnet barrier that draws in rings, allowing you to maintain your super form much easier. You can go without the Ring Cap Ups, but Magnetic Barrier is essential to winning races as Super Sonic.
Now if there was a way I could improve Super Sonic, it would be to allow him to use all shortcuts like in the first Riders game, and to give him a proper GP gauge so he can utilize gravity power like everyone else. You know... "As it should be." Its a real nuisance having to constantly lose all your rings when using the games main gimmick, although you can kinda use this to your advantage in order to use the spring shortcuts which can only be used while on foot.
That's all I have to say about Super Sonic in this game. Now I better get back to practicing with him so I can blast through the World Grand Prix. That'll be a doozy...
