Description
"When I view all beings not as special creations, but as the lineal descendants of some few beings which lived long before the first bed of the Cambrian system was deposited, they seem to me to become ennobled." — Charles Darwin, On the Origin of Species (1859)The theory of evolution is absolutely stunning to me. An understanding of it and the immense weight it brings to our existence may terrify some, but it should enthral and excite us all: it provides the true account of our origins, uniting us with everything on Earth alive today and everything that once was. ♥
Something I do wanna address is this: although many people choose not to accept it (weirdly, around 40% of USA and UK citizens don't) it’s not a case of belief, and denying it due to faith is just ignoring what we've found. The entirety of human and animal biology only makes sense because evolution has happened. The common 'argument' that evolution is "only a theory" misses the point of what that actually means: it's accepted as scientific fact just like gravity, or the existence of atoms and how they interact, which too are "only theories". A scientific theory is more than just speculation: it's a well thought-out group of propositions and principles that explain facts about the real world, which must be testable and allow for verifiable predictions. "Making predictions" doesn't mean that we can predict the future of evolution – that's pretty much impossible – but that we can predict what we should find when looking at the fossil record and into animals' genetic codes, and with every new discovery these predictions are proven again and again to be true. A theory becomes 'truth' when so much evidence has accumulated in its favour (with an absence of decisive evidence against it) that virtually all reasonable people will accept it. This makes evolution fact in the eyes of science. This doesn't mean that a 'true' theory can’t ever be falsified, of course – science shouldn't be arrogant, and theories are always subject to change in the light of new evidence. But as it stands, it doesn't seem at all likely that the theory of evolution – such an obvious phenomenon when you come to understand it – will ever be overturned.
Removing an 'intelligent designer' from our world view needn't reduce the awe or beauty in how we see ourselves: we weren't deliberately created for any purpose, but have arisen through billions of years of unconscious tinkering by natural selection, set in motion by conditions that could have produced something so different had they been ever so slightly changed, to become what we are, as has everything else around us. To me – and hopefully many others – that's so much more beautiful and satisfying as an explanation of our existence.
Of course, many who accept evolutionary theory into a religious world-view believe that an intelligent creator set evolution in motion through some means, which is totally reasonable: religion doesn't have to be incompatible with evolution!
Discussion and questions in the comments are very welcome! With a good understanding of evolution I can hopefully give decent answers or at least direct you to where you can find them c:
For those wanting to better-familiarise themselves with the theory and evidence – perhaps because you're not sure about where you stand, or would just like to add to your current understanding – I'd really recommend the book Why Evolution Is True by Jerry A. Coyne, which is a very readable recent text.
The fossil in the background is my favourite famous dinosaur-bird transitional species, Archaeopteryx! ♥

Yes, finally, someone gets it! I'm a Catholic and in favour of evolution and I abhor creationism, I wish more atheists were smart like you and realised that it's possible <3

There is a theory called "intelligent design". It supports the evolution theory and religion. I personally am not involved with religion, but I find it interesting that those two concepts can coexist.

Which part? Which part do you think is a fairy tale?
Natural selection? Nope, pretty much common sense that a creature that's better suited for their enviroment has a higher chance of survival.
Mutation? Sorry, we've discovered examples of mutations of all kinds. Whether it be adding genetic info, deleting genetic info or just changing it, we've seen it.
Or do you deny that traits pass on from generation to generation? In that case, you're on your own, I'm not very good at sex-ed.
Perhaps what you mean is that evolution can only cause change within its species and that speciation can't occur, but then you'd be wrong again, seeing as speciation has occured under laboratory conditions.
If you object to anything I said, google it. There's no point in me referencing something that you could find on the first page of google.
Hope this nonchallant response from your local toucan got you to realise just how wrong your view on evolution is, although I kinda doubt it. Do some research on your own, especially about what people who actually study evolution say, seeing as there are countless individuals who try to misrepresent it.

I'm a little ashamed to say I used to hate evolution theory (I... kind of had an environmentally-imposed phase) I find it so fascinating. Especially when I think about what could exist in the future!

Believe it or not, many churches actually accept evolution. I'm Catholic, and the Catholic Church actually accepts evolution. You see anti-evolution more among evangelical Protestants (such as Southern Baptists).

Evolution is incredible, the idea all life on this Earth is connected, we are all related. I am a person of spiritual faith (though mostly non-religious) and I believe God and evolution should go hand in hand, not be separated. Evolution is just how God made everything, at least in my view.

I think the people who view this whole process is just "eating in order to survive and reproduce people are missing a big part of the picture. Sure reproduction and survival are the goals, I think we can admit that but I think what's much more important is the path to get there, and that path has over billions of years continuously inspired more cooperation get started with jeans coming together to form DNA DNA coming together to form cells, cells living inside other cells, and becoming part of each other, cells bonding together to form larger organisms larger organisms forming social groups that they need to survive! It's an increasing chain of cooperation, and I find that beautiful bed missed all the strife and chaos and hostility of the universe that it's cooperation bringing together of things that truly seems to drive change on the planet earth.

I am actually a Catholic Christian and I believe in evolution, but in the fact it was created to be that way. I think the assumption that all animals and everything came at the very exact same time is ridiculous. The bible is not meant to be a scientific text book.

yeah, I'm open minded with religion really, and I love the idea that a god somewhere out there made evolution. I really don't like it when people say, "god doesn't exist because evolution!!" or "evolution doesn't exist because god!". like, cant you just realize that the two can work together? anyways I 100% agree with you!!!

No, evolution does not. The human species has variation. This variation is often in response to environmental pressures. The lighter skin tone of European and Asian peoples evolved after these populations moved out of Africa. Even then, the difference in skin tone followed different paths in both the European and Asian populations. Its variation and adaptation that simply allows each human population to be more suited to their environment. Darker skin evolved in response to loss of body hair (1.2million years ago) and the higher amounts of UV radiation that was now able to penetrate the skin, thus allowing the body to regulate the amount of UV radiation entering the body. Lighter skin evolved in humans in response to lower amounts of UV radiation when compared to the environment of their African counterparts.
There is a direct correlation between skin color and the geographic distribution of UV radiation levels. Dark skin tone is ancestral to all humans. This does not mean that humans with lighter skin tones are superior to dark-skinned peoples. It simply shows that human kind is adapted to different environmental conditions based on the geographic location of populations.

Honey, people who tell you that you're "less evolved" or "closer to monkeys" don't understand how evolution actually works. No human is "closer to monkeys" than another. We are all equidistant from a common ancestor that we have with monkeys.

The basis of science is to "question everything" right? You said so yourself. So then why is it that when I question it, I get ridiculed? Am I not allowed to give my own input on theory. Life itself is bias.
It is not scientists' role to "cherry-pick" what truths to publish. But it is our role to find out "truth" for our own, of ourselves.
If I were to think like the rest of you, it wouldn't be science. Even the bible says "question everything". So why do I need to look for answers from one theory.
If I were to accept what you accept you, it wouldn't be science.
