Fox realism. Photoshop CS6, 20 hours+Some time ago I asked you to suggest me an animal for my realistic drawing. Some people said the animal which I chose later - a fox, and I promised you to mention those people here. Thanks again for the suggestions!!

I like this very much, but I think perhaps you depend too much on the eyes carrying the drawing. There is no doubt at all that the eye's make this very nice...
My college professor always used to pick on me in drawing class, always asking the question..."Is this really what you are see.
Fur is a 3D object, a single hair not only reflects light, but throws and shows a shadow on each and every hair and then you have the form beneath the fur, the muscle and bone structure. That is where the eye of the artist comes into play...Photographs are great to work from but they can't show what lies beneath the fur. The artist's eye can. Here the nose on this fox looks misshapen, not because it most likely didn't appear that way in your reference, but because as an artist you followed your reference and not the the form or structure that as an artist you know should be there.
Now why would I seem to be coming down hard on you here... Well you show here you have a very good understanding on what it takes to make an eye come to life. I want to encourage you to now extend and expound on that idea and give that same sort of attention to the rest of the drawing. There are a number of different technics for doing this, Ever heard of black velvet painting? This is where you take a black surface and and sort of paint with light. Another technique is along that same idea called the scratch board technique to try and show the play of light and dark. Still another way is by using color, which I think is the most difficult and takes a very good eye indeed. See, there is not just yellows, browns and white in a foxes fur...If you zoom in on your reference, I mean really zoom in, you will find at the pixel level that are all kinds colors in the fur of a fox.
You have shown you know how to do eyes and you do them well, so it is time to move on to the next challenge. If I were your art instructor I would encourage you to explore the different artistic techniques, look at other artist work and study how they handle it and in this process find your own technique...
As you know from learning how to do eyes there is a technique to every thing, little tricks to learn along the way to make things really pop. Here I am saying the eyes really pop, but the fur falls flat...
Yet I don't want you to get the wrong idea, the whole reason I wanted to critique this is because I thought it was very nice. Art is an ever evolving journey I have stepped out of my comfort zone to reach out to you and perhaps help you along on your journey, I am very glad you asked for a critique on this and I hope that in some way I have cracked open another door and let you peek in. It is said that those who can do and those that can't teach. I couldn't do what you have done here at least not better then what you have done here, so why would I say anything at all? Ah, that is always the kicker...lol I don't know, what direction you will go from here with your art. I don't even know if you will go anywhere. I am telling you this art work excited me enough to want to talk to you about it.

This work is truly magnificent and stunning! Perhaps just only a nose is a bit "crooked"?Β Β But that's not really a mistake, I love this drawing! I've put it in Featured folder of groupΒ Β Keep up such great work!
