Description I should spread out my uploads, but I've been excited to show this!

This was my second piece (Indigenous Sorcery was the first) that made it into the Spring Show at my school! it was a three week final, although the last week was mostly spent screwing around.

crosshatching on toned paper.
(I may be an overachiever)

portraits are really not my strong suit, at all and so this piece really caught my eye. I love charcoal pieces that use the paper as a medium tone. my mother loves charcoal and paint, and i wish i could grasp this detail and perspective in this medium i call my personal demon.

I was drawn to this as soon as I saw it. I love the figure, and the sketching - I especially love the fish in the mirror.

I do, however, believe that a large part of my liking this piece may be that the guy has a strong resemblance to one of my favorite characters, Xigbar from Kingdom Hearts. If you don't know who that is:

Anyhow, I love this, I really do, and I feel bad that I can't quite stick my finger to "why"...

I've had people tell me this guy reminds them of someone from everyone from "a young hippish Stalin" to "That guy from Gone With the Wind" to some other odd suggestions too.

This is an amazing piece, I'd be proud of it too if I were you.

How is it placed wrong? hahaa, I'm pretty sure you can't misplace a siggy. (I moved it towards the left because it didn't stand out when put over the pencil)

I just don't like it there, it disturbs the harmony somehow :/

Wh-wh-Whoa-whoa-WOW. There's something relaxing about pencil work. Those eyes, and everything. Crosshatching must have taken a long time, but it looks so clean. Really like the detail of the mirror's frame having a reflection too. (It seems like one of those overlooked things most of the time)

The contemplative expressions telling me that this is a man forever seeking the fabled floating goldfish. Tragically they only appear outside of his line of sight.

Thank you so much! I cannot express how much I love your comments (I have all your stuff on my watch list. I'll get to commenting as soon as school stops swamping me!)

The crosshatching was time consuming, but sort of calming. I think setting it up was the hardest thing.

and yes, the tragic scenario of never finding those floating fish. I think I'm like that, too.

I feel my life would be more serene if only I had a goldfish orbiting my head, at least in the mirror world. I really like the design of the mirror frame -- there's something about humans that don't forgive irregularities in inanimate objects such as skewered angles/perspectives, so I'm impressed you pulled it off. I also believe this is one of your stronger human compositions, and both sides of the man are rendered very vividly.

You just might be an overachiever. Who am I to say?

kiki-doodle In reply to Hyunthesosarian [2009-07-31 08:18:16 +0000 UTC]

It's actually a real mirror. The model set himself up on a stand and there was a mirror behind him to the side. It was actually a few feet away, so realistically if I drew what I saw (aka, like everyone else) the composition would ONLY have been his face. I spent the first six hours just refining a sketch, working out a composition, and finding a way to add in the mirror as well as the man.

... seriously.

Once I got everything DOWN right, the detail was just easy work. Seriously, it's the set up and the understanding that takes TIME. The fish were an afterthought I added in the middle of the night at home one night. YES!
