Description

Hailing from the old, arid planet of Gadarm, located in between the Carina and Perseus Arms, rimwards of the Esseles Hierarchy, the Feud are a newly emerged sapient species.

Due to their low gravity homeworld, the Feud are tall, standing over two meters tall on average with a bipedal stance- both their upper and lower limbs end with three digits, with a large head situated on a thick, muscular neck. Featuring two sets of large, black eyes and two prominent tarantula-like tusks protruding from their short snouts, their heads are encase in a chitinous armor extending all the way down their back, although most of their body dose not present any. Their skin features various shades of light brown and bronze to camouflage in the prairies of Gadarm, where the feud live in small hunting packs. Due to a weak magnetic field, Gadarm's surface is subjected to intense solar radiation, forcing the feud to leave their burrows at night, as direct sunlight during the day is very harmful. For this, the feud have excellent night vision and a acute sense of smell, in addition to low level heat sense. Though they aren't the strongest beings, even by the standards of a low gravity world, the feud compensate with endurance: two hearths, large lungs taking advantage of the oxygen rich atmosphere and small humps on their backs to store nutrients for long periods of time, they are primary stalkers and excel in pack hunting.

The environment of Gadarm has sculpted the feud into a pragmatic, hardy species who's society is very utilitarian. The various packs of up to 30 individuals form larger entities known as Compounds- while the packs are mostly nomadic, moving about their territory and living in various temporary burrows scattered along their territory, the Compounds are large, tens of thousand strong forts formed from hundreds of packs which share a common history. Each year, the packs return to the Compounds to spend the winter, during which they intermingle and, usually, members move between them either due to some difference with their former packs or simply to be with a mate (which is a permanent bond, although the feud never bothered to do any complicated ritual for it). Each pack is led by an Alpha, who wields supreme power over the pack, and while at the Compound they form a joint council and resolve important issues.

In feud society, the Alpha is not only the leader, but the protector of the pack: their authority and power comes from how strong he or she is, and as such is trusted at the forefront of protecting his or her subjects. Large scale wars are extremely uncommon, but not because the feud are adverse to violence, but because any major issue between packs, or even Compounds, are solved by the Alphas battling each other- most feud would happily participate in protecting their pack or Compound, but if the Alpha itself isn't capable of at least attempting to solve the fundamental issue alone most vehemently refuse to participate and often defect to a more competent pack. Over the many millennia, this has allowed the feud to solve most of their issues before they escalated to massive casualties, but now always. Three times specifically several of the larger Compounds, for various reasons, have waged war on one another. However, these conflicts were brief, if destructive, and usually consisted in mass ambush attacks on enemy caps where the victor would often exterminate every last member of the opposition.

The last of these war happened due to outside intervention: around the Earth year 2140, an esseles ship scouting rimwards crash landed on Gadarm. The feud Compounds, some of which were fairy technologically advance (at about a mid 19th century equivalent) found the wreckage and, understanding how the existence of the ship changed the status quo, attempted to wrestle it for their own. Although brief and indecisive, the war left a lasting impact on feud, who, upon finding several more esseles ships flying in their skies searching for the missing ship, called a truce. Although they were forced by the Hierarchy to turn over the crashed ship before they could analyze its secrets, its very existence emboldened the feud scientists to work hard to bring their species into a new age. Just two decades later, one of the Compounds, Vauxo, managed to be the first to achieve sub-orbital flight, followed soon after by its two main rivals, Nabia and Adoun. In addition, a number of garian explorers have made official contact with the Compounds. Though they are far from widely known to the galaxy, their position close to the Hierarchy and the growing fear and very real threat of being conquered by it has made the League open talks with the Compounds for establishing a base in their systems and offering aid for development.
