Description

The Rupha'iaa species (singular Ruphian) hail from the planet of Pedri'oo, better known as Rupha'iaa, near the outskirts of the Milky Way, in the Perseus Arm, very close to the Ssa'eshik, an aggressive and xenophobic species which the rupha'iaa and their government, the Commonwealth of Rupha'iaa, are sworn enemies of. Their homeworld of Pedri'oo from the Gamokol'aii system is similar in size and mass to Earth, although much warmer and dominated by a rocky grey and brown deserts and some spars forests of dark colored plants.

The ruphai'aa themselves have evolved to survive in the red waste of Kalla'n, the harshest and most unforgivable environment of the entire planet with temperatures going as high as 50 degrees during the day (which last for 206 hours or 8.5 days) and as low as -30 during the equally long night. With spars water supplies and food, the rupha'iaa initially evolved to fill a small niche in the food chain, but became such fierce predators that they eventually rose to not only dominate the Kalla'n but migrate out of it and become the alpha predator of the entire planet; although that did not happen until later in their development, near the onset of the industrial age- as such large swats of their homeworld remained unexplored for millennia.

The rupha'iaa are tall, standing up to 2 meters in height and are distinguished first by their striking red hued skin marked with various, individually unique brownish patters to help blend in with their environment; the other is their large head, featuring two sets of eyes, a very pronounce overbite that exposes their dangerous teeth and finally a fleshy frill adorning each side of their faces in various shapes (there are five or six main shapes which are signs of ethnicity from rupha'iaa society). The frill is also adorned with a variety of unique markings, usually bright red, that are used for displays in disputes.

Rupha'iaa society is harsh, where survival of the fittest is the rule of the land and martial prowess is the most important skill for the majority; that being said, the rupha'iaa are also pragmatic enough to appreciate individuals who display other useful talents. Thus, individuals like healers and discoverers that can make life easier for the general population are very revered and sought after; these individuals and their talents have often been at the center of numerous wars fought between the city states of Kalla'n. Similarly, the rupha'iaa put great emphasis on family ties, and' loyalty to the clan and kin is seen as one of the greatest virtues. Finally, the rupha'iaa, while war like and violent, generally look down on picking on weaker individuals; gaining strength and prestige through one's own strengths and talents is the only way one gains societies respect, and gaining power by taking on a stronger foe is far more respectable than stepping on weaker people; thus, the lower facets of society, individuals who lack the ambition or physical strength to ascend the social ladder is not well respected but generally left alone.

After a violent history of inter clan warfare with written records dating back as far as 7500 BCE, the rupha'iaa their homeworld eventually fell under the rule of one of the largest clans, the infamous Vinke'en. The clan unified the planet's scattered city states over a period of a hundred years of warfare (dating from apr 4000 to to 3900 BCE) and installed a brutal authoritarian regime. While this Regime contributed significantly to the development of their civilization and brought about a technological revolution, the brutal suppression of the populace, particularly the near slave like treatment of ethnicities not closely related to the Vinke'en, eventually lead to even some elements within the Vinke'en turn on the ruling family. A devastating civil war nearly brought the collapse of civilization, but eventually the Regime was overthrown. The leaders of the clans were promptly executed, and the winning factions, an alliance of 30 of the largest tribes, set forth to restore order.

The survivors of the Vinke'en, those who joined the side of the Rebellion, were pardoned and allowed to join in forming the Coalition of Rupha'iaa. A long period of rebuilding followed and kick started what s considered the golden age; lasting from 3600 BCE to about 2100 BCE, this period saw the rise of the Coalition (a union of clans, based in the city of Vradro'xuu) from its meager origins on a single planet into a veritable interstellar power, eventually ending with the Coalition-Conglomerate War of 2050-1800 BCE. The Conglomerate, also known as the Ssa'eshika Empire, belonging to the xenophobic Ssa'eshika, began to rise around the same time as the rupha'iaa, and tensions between the two rose continuously over the centuries, particularly since the ssa'eshika insisted on conquering and forcing every species in the vicinity that was weaker that them to either become servants (little more than slaves) or be exterminated- a practice that the rupha'iaa opposed on principle as they view gaining strength by stepping on the weak to be the lowest of low.

Eventually, after numerous small border skirmishes, tensions erupted into all out war that continued for two centuries- culminating in the Battle of Sankar, one of the largest battles in recorded galactic history, over five thousand warships between the Conglomerate and the Coalition (as well as its allies). The battle weakened both powers and an armistice was brokered, and a cold war settled in for the next few millennia.

With the Conglomerate becoming more and more hostile to outsiders, the Coalition established itself firmly as harsh but generally fair and benevolent entity, with its stance against the ssa'eshika gaining it and its people quite a bit of prestige. While the Coalition itself remained neutral, boldly declaring that all of its available forces shall be used as a deterrent against the Conglomerate and refused to ally with either the Groth or League during any of their wars, numerous mercenary groups from rupha'iaa clans spread across the galaxy and fought on both sides.
