In the distance I could hear a bell chime. A soft melodious tone that resounded in the air. The cicadas chirped in the background as I sat on the front porch staring at the back of my sister's head. Her milky blonde highlights blending into caramel and then cascading into rich auburn curls that fell down her shoulders.
I had always loved her hair. I still remembered that day last year on her fifteenth birthday when we sat in this exact same place as I braided it. She leaned against my leg waiting patiently until I was done. She started humming a tune and then we burst into song singing that old radio melody that we had grown up with. It had ended up scaring our neighbor's cat who then fell off their car, and then scurried away, really pissed off.
But now as we sat here once again that peaceful feeling was gone. It was no longer happy. It was not warm or restful. It was agony. Ruthless and unforgiving. It ate away at my conscious. Gnawing until I just couldn't stand it anymore. I shot off the bench and ran down the porch steps. She stared at me, startled, and then scrambled to her feet to rush after me. We practically raced down the street, anything to get away from the damn house.
I didn't slow down until we were at least three blocks away. Iris panted heavily, giving me a questioning look. I just motioned for her to follow and then I turned and headed back down the street. I wanted to get away for a while. Just the two of us. Any where but that stupid hole in the wall. We needed to go somewhere that we could stay over night. I turned back to make sure Iris was following and then headed to Lucile's house. She always had a spare room open. And who knew how long we would be staying there for.
