I just read your friend Joe's story based on this drawing. Both the concept and the tale are super interesting! Keep up the good work.Β

Aw cool...
You get these creatures from your dreams?

What poison do you take to induce said dreams ?
Winsor McCay drew a strip "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend" which had a different dreamer each episode, suffering the most confounded trash and weirdness in dreams because he or she ate a rarebit before retiring to bed.
A few names, story ideas, etc., came to me in dreams, but I have to recall them to use such.

If anyone is trying to *break the cycle of reincarnation*, they definitely deserve it. I vote for critter.
P.S. The idea of reincarnation is not Buddhist. I mean, it is, but originally it's much older than that and Buddhism just adopted it.

You are right of course. It might be that sometime earlier I had a dream with Buddhist setting infested with Undead, and this guy is basically Undead cleaner. xP

It is technically true that Buddhism adopted reincarnation, though I'd go a step further and say that Buddhism began as a reaction against Hinduism, and naturally inherited some of its teachings and changed them significantly. Buddhist reincarnation and Hindu reincarnation have differences both subtle and stark, so Mike's creature could be a "Buddhist Cerberus," or it could be both Hindu and Buddhist. Or it may transcend human conceptions of spirituality, playing a role in a much greater cosmic system which Hinduism and Buddhism perceive differently!... Just spitballing some thoughts!

It seems like a kind of police or policy enforcer of samsara, the seemingly endless wheel of life and death.
This should be a problem for lichs (if mythologies, religious metaphors, and popular fantasy is allowed to mix)

I wouldn't say it belongs to either. I'd say it's much older than both. Not to mention it's a law of Nature, so it doesn't really matter which humanΒ belief came up with the concept first.
As for what "their" reincarnation is like.... I don't know, but I'm honestly not too interested. I feel free to assume both would feel off to me and trigger rather negative associations because it is precisely due to their views on reincarnation that I resisted the concept for a long time in my own spiritual development, because I was literally repulsed by those beliefs. Which seems quite paradoxical right now....

At no point did I say reincarnation belonged to either one. Other cultures believe in various forms of reincarnation as well, ranging from Alaskan Eskimos to African tribes. The only point I wanted to raise is that Hindu and Buddhist reincarnation are similar and different, and Mike's creature could belong to either system or fit into a much greater cosmic system which Buddhism and Hinduism perceive differently.
As far as personal beliefs go, I have no desire to discuss or argue such things on this page.

It seemed kinda implied.

I don't think it was, but based on your profile you are a very analytic and intuitive person who can perceive things few people even consider, so maybe it was implied indeed and I was merely being thoughtless. I don't know. All I know is I did nothing to imply such a thing consciously. I don't adhere to any one belief, and I sure as hell know damn well that reincarnation isn't exclusive to any group.
I'm just a loser who enjoys speculating the nature of Mike's creatures.

And yet I sometimes overreact, too. I dislike it strongly when people ascribe certain spiritual concept or entity to a single religion, especially when they do so by assuming very wrong things. This makes me overly defensive on these things. Far too often they take for a given things that I know to not be true.... so if I react, it's because I kinda take it for the default situation, sometimes. And of course, I can be wrong this way.
Btw, I didn't want to start a belief argument either. My only intention was to point out why I personally dislike Buddhism / Hinduism and don't go into that direction, usually.

I wonder if this is more a Hindu cerberus, since in all the forms of Buddhism I learned of, the cycle of reincarnation is either nonexistent, or it is a thing to be liberated from, depending on the culture or group. Perhaps this beast is even a pet of lord Yama's.
Fascinating beast, by the way, I can imagine it depicted on the walls of eastern holy temples.

Oooooooh. That's why it's called the Purifier! Excellent!
I reckon Tripitaka and Sun Wukong encountered this beast at one point or another on their journey West.
