Description One of several types of devolved men  appearing in Lovecraft's stories.

"When they had thinned out enough to be glimpsed as separate organisms, I saw that they were dwarfed, deformed hairy devils or apes-monstrous and diabolic caricatures of the monkey tribe."

"The object was nauseous; a filthy whitish gorilla thing with sharp yellow fangs and matted fur. It was the ultimate product of mammalian degeneration; the frightful outcome of isolated spawning, multiplication, and cannibal nutrition above and below the ground; the embodiment of all the snarling and chaos and grinning fear that lurk behind life. It had looked at me as it died, and its eyes had the same odd quality that marked those other eyes which had stared at me underground and excited cloudy recollections. One eye was blue, the other brown."

H.P. Lovecraft, The Lurking Fear

Interesting. I will need to read this story. Among many others skulls and bones, remains of similar creatures were found in a grot under the Delapore's ancestral estate in the story The Rats in the Walls. Perhaps there is some connection or reference beetwen this stories? I am intrigued.
IMHO: you have drawn too large braincase and too weakly developed jaws and chewing muscles. It is more like the head of the normal ancient Sarmatian  www.google.com/search?q=skull&…  www.google.com/search?q=skull&…  www.google.com/search?q=museum… than the head of a degraded person vnnews.ru/images/wsscontent/ar… vnnews.ru/images/wsscontent/ar… media.tvzvezda.ru/news/vstrane… .

You are right, my experience with drawing humanoids is insufficient, I felt something is wrong here.

And yeah, Lovecraft clearly was interested in the concept of human beings reverting back into more animalistic forms... I think his first story with that trope was "Beast in the Cave", both Rats and Lurking Fear might be seen as an expansion of that one.

Even when human, the Anglophobic Martenses had that dichromatism of the eyes (like many cats).
The last truly civilized Martense had corresponded with a cultured outsider and expressed growing dislike for his kin and intending to not return home, but to seek his fortune in the outside cities. Then his letters stopped coming. The correspomdent investigated and was told by the now already repellant slops that he had died in an accident. Disinterring and examining the body found fatal injuries inconsstent with accidental death. The family became shunned and lights eventually stopped shining from house windows. The building was found to be derelict. ...

Lovecraft apparently quite liked the trope of humans getting back into more primitive forms for various reasons.

I know, but I wonder if Lovecraft got the idea of this creature from the Morlocks.

The Martense family are highly underated mosters. Also, a nice folk-death metal group to be...
