Description Guardian of a treasure; Similar toad-like monsters are generally associated with Cthulhu Mythos as far as I've seen, as the Outer Gods' servitors.
All who waited  for me to start doing M.R. James art, the time has come.

"'My dear Gregory, I am telling you the exact truth. I believe I am now acquainted with the extremity of terror and repulsion which a man can endure without losing his mind.  I can only just manage to tell you now the bare outline of the experience. I was conscious of a most horrible smell of mould, and of a cold kind of face pressed against my own, and moving slowly over it, and of several--I don't know how many--legs or arms or tentacles or something clinging to my body.
(...)
One thing I did notice in the carving on the well-head, which I think must have escaped you. It was a horrid, grotesque shape — perhaps more like a toad than anything else, and there was a label by it inscribed with the two words, “Depositum custodi”*."

*'Keep that which is committed to thee.’"

M.R. James, The Treasure of Abbot Thomas

As I see you're an M. R. James fan, I'd love to see you draw some of his creepy ghosts--Dr. Rant from The Tractate Middoth, for instance!

That story is included in my collection and while MRJ isn't my favorite writer I appreciate his weird stories. For now, I plan to draw some of his less human creatures.

great creature, one tag says "ghost" so this... thing must be some bizarre lovecraftian ghost-like entity that is guarding the treasure.

MR James work is generally known as ghost stories.

M.R. James wrote primarily ghost stories, and most people, including I think the man himself, called all his stories ghost stories, likely using the word ghost to mean supernatural horrors in general. So this monster is technically a ghost.

What I'm truly curious about is how an abbot managed to get that monster to guard treasure.

Perfect, exactly what would inspire madness in even the best of us. An excellent example of the mind of the first Horror writer.

Side question: what, if you have read any, is your favorite Lovecraft novel?

I've read nearly all of his work. Do you mean all of his writings or some specific ones to choose? I am not sure which fall into the category of stories and which are considered novels.

Well Novel, Novella, Short Story, any of them really. I own the Necronomicon: A Collection of the Best Weird Tales by H.P. Lovecraft.

Ooh Shadow over Innsmouth is good. My top two stories are, damn it I cant remeber their names...

1) My favorite has to do with an archaeologist who discovers ancient burial tombs, or at least what he thinks are ancient burial tombs, in Arabia. After unearthing them, he finds that these tombs actually lead into a vast underground network of tunnels that are housing some fish like constructions. Before he is able to find out any more, he begins to be driven mad by sounds coming from nowhere, and everywhere. The story ends with him fleeing back up to the surface, although we are never really sure if he made it out.

2) The Music of Erich Zann, oh that one was so good.

Ya know, it had been a while since I read it. I just went back and found out that they weren't the fish things, but rather the cocodile satyr creatures.... but honestly who is counting, Lovecraft has so many strange creatures it is hard to keep them straight.

Really nice, this one.
My fave M.R. James spook is the bed sheet ghost from "Oh whistle and I will come to you, my lad"
Something about the unseen forces clothed in blankets freaked me out.

Sorry, I know this not related but how bout some Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter/Barsoom sketches someday? There are plenty of weird creatures on Mars, the four armed fifteen feet tall green martians the original bug eyed aliens!

You may have already done this with all the sketches you have done.
