Description Guardian of a treasure; Similar toad-like monsters are generally associated with Cthulhu Mythos as far as I've seen, as the Outer Gods' servitors.
All who waited  for me to start doing M.R. James art, the time has come.

"'My dear Gregory, I am telling you the exact truth. I believe I am now acquainted with the extremity of terror and repulsion which a man can endure without losing his mind.  I can only just manage to tell you now the bare outline of the experience. I was conscious of a most horrible smell of mould, and of a cold kind of face pressed against my own, and moving slowly over it, and of several--I don't know how many--legs or arms or tentacles or something clinging to my body.
(...)
One thing I did notice in the carving on the well-head, which I think must have escaped you. It was a horrid, grotesque shape — perhaps more like a toad than anything else, and there was a label by it inscribed with the two words, “Depositum custodi”*."

*'Keep that which is committed to thee.’"

Sadly there are no John Carter books in print in Poland.  I am considering ordering some in the future as I want to read this stuff but it's expensive so not any time soon.

Im not sure if it was translated into Polish, but I think they are public domain.

The three novels I have read so far in the series is excellent, some of the best fantasy/sci fi/action I have ever read and it was pretty much the first! He was definitely an influence on Howard.

That may be but I hate reading from the screen.

I understand. We will need books when and how they shut down the net in another decade or so.

This is one of my favorite scenes ever in horror literature. And I think your creature perfectly fits the role. I look at it and all I can imagine is a terrible clamminess and an alien hunger or malevolence. I love it.

Seeing as how August Derleth added Algernon Blackwood's Wendigo to the Cthulhu Mythos, and Lovecraft himself added Bethmoora from Lord Dunsany's stories, I don't see why some of M.R. James's tales couldn't be lumped in purely for the fun of it. Robert E. Howard and Smith both prominently used toad-like monsters as representations of alien horrors in their work. Maybe this mysterious guardian could be some spawn of Tsathoggua. XP

Count Magnus' familiar is also a very Lovecraftian entity.
