The story has but one flaw. As originally written, the decoded message was to be in FRENCH. Each language has its own letter ratios. BUT the editor said that would be over the heads of readers, so Poe rewrote that part. It did retain the erroneous letter ratios.

Some family friends now live on the island the story opens on. Not much development.

Since I wrote the above, the forementioned friends failed to send a Christmas card to me in 2019. I do hope they are all right, Too many old friends are dyiing or moving away, Maybe the ones who never told me were not real friends...

Yes, I am aware. It is just that the monsters that do exist go everywhere from the living manifestation of plague to one angry orangutan.
Besides, one of the most iconic monsters in horror and poetic fiction has to be the conqueror worm.
