Plain sketch work without color makes your work feel raw and undiscovered save for those who would explore the unknown. Gives it a real unique feel and I dig it.

Thanks, glad to see there are people appreciating such style while majority seems to prefer full colors

Well while color has it's place there is always room for the starkness of black and white, depending on, among other things, theme and tone of course.

The karkadann cannot be defeated in his own element! Gah! Lies and slander. Nonetheless, a simurgh is no match for..Zahhak.

Fake news! Simurgh are benevolent. When they're not eating random people.

This would only my second time introduced to the Simurgh. The first was from a DnD monster manual and since I never thought it was an official Persian folklore creature. Also good idea to have these two face off since both originate from Persian folklore and would make sense for them to meet.

Heheh yeah, it is quite obscure but hopefully will become more known.

The Simurgh is my goddamn totem.
She is a mystical bird who in some stories nests on the world's tallest mountain and in others nests in the tree of life. She has seen the birth and death of many worlds, and the coming and going of many civilizations, and the eternal lightless void beyond all life. She brings medicine and wisdom to the world, and she is the loving mother of abandoned babies, and she assists heroes who are worthy of her aid on their journeys. She is the queen of all birds, and their souls are her feathers. She is a symbol of healing, life, motherhood, wisdom, transcendence, imagination, the soul itself.
My Firebird story was partially inspired by her.

Do you mind if I quote this in my Simurgh drawing description?

Ah when you mentioned 'tree of life' I was immediately reminded of your short story involving the fire bird and I see the similarities and inspiration now.

I've been waiting for something like this for a long time.
Also, this characters from Iranian and Central Asian mythology that are rare and exotic for modern pop culture. I love it. Looking at them, I recall those times when I traveled along the fabulous Bukhara, where the ancient Zoroastrian beliefs are still alive. I remember how I admired her ancient fortresses, mausoleums, madrassas, palaces and minarets, decorated with intricate mosaic, the secret of making it has long been lost and modern restorers can no longer recreate the original colors

Nope. Even dragons fear the Simurgh.
I love how she's so peaceful and graceful in your original picture, and so absolutely fierce and powerful in this one. Her form is absolutely commanding, even without the eminent tail. A wise mother and also a fearsome momma bear.
