Description The primordial blob. In my headcanon Ubbo is an entity likely used by the Elder Things to produce primitive lifeforms on earth. It consumed the magical tablets in the process and turned into Abhoth.

"There, in the grey beginning of Earth, the formless mass that was Ubbo-Sathla reposed amid the slime and the vapors. Headless, without organs or members, it sloughed from its oozy sides, in a slow, ceaseless wave, the amoebic forms that were the archetypes of earthly life. Horrible it was, if there had been aught to apprehend the horror; and loathsome, if there had been any to feel loathing. About it, prone or tilted in the mire, there lay the mighty tablets of star-quarried stone that were writ with the inconceivable wisdom of the pre-mundane gods."

Clark Ashton Smith, Ubbo-Sathla

In one story, the vision of the FAR distant future, beyond Zothique, beyond the Beetles, beyond even the spider-things, to when all life is sludge and ooze now, and Ubbo-Sathla is re-integrating !

Lovecraft hinted that Ubbo-Sathla was created from raw elements by the Old Race as rubbish left over from the creating of the shoggoths.

What story is that?

The article did not name the story about the return of Ubbo-Sathla at the end of earth's life, but Lovecraft in "At the Mountains of Madness" described the origin of the shoggoths. On all other Old Race-colonized worlds shoggoths are useful & obedient, BUT on the cursed world known as Earth...

The only way to see these tablets is to voyage back in time via the cloudy crystal and that de-evolves you so you arrive in no condition to read, let alone decipher the wisdom of the pre-mundane gods.

The story is ingenious !

I think there must be some other ways, after all somebody wrore those tabletsvand brought them to earth.

The gods that died before the earth was more than chaos.

OK. I like where your headcanon is going on this. If I remember right, Ubbo is the star of its own story witnessed by some dude on a sudden vision quest through time and space (one of my fave CAS tropes possibly borrowed from W H Hodgson) and Abhoth is basically the same thing deep in the mountain caverns in The Seven Geases. Yeah, I always thought it was weird that CAS used a different name for essentially the same thing. It maaaybe was intentional to mark the difference of the creature over time or Smith might simply have momentarily forgotten the original name and just made a new similar one because he didn't figure there would be a bunch of obsessive fans in the future fretting about these details. So, just to move past the issue in my head, I'm going with your clever take on it. And it also makes sense that Ubbo/Abhoth is the spawn point of the Shoggoths.

BTW One of my favorite images of Ubbo/Abhoth is the Erol Otus version for D&D Deities and Demigods. My dugeon master (my friend's older brother Kyle) showed me the pic when I was 9.

that is an interesting speculation, although I think that differences are distinct enough, and most importantly Ubbo was only said to live on primordial Earth and implied to somehow be gone afterward.

this is the Primordial Soup of life, now do Abhoth, i imagine it would be look more bizarre if it consumed the stellar tablets.

I think any large grouping of people, like a concert or even a riot, is a kind of innate primordial drive to reconnect to the chaos and unity of Abhoth.
This might be a stretch, but even the famous theater scene in The Blob (1958) symbolically represents what I call ritualized human "shunting" behaviors (see 'Society' 1989) where people can become one thing. In the case of movies, a mass of eyes and consumptive mouths. In the case of concerts, a writhing mass responding to both the pleasure of music and the pain of mass movement. The Blob also shows the necessary human need to escape mass interactions and preserve individual life as the theater goers run screaming from the theater the mindless force that will make them one, i.e., death.
Just a thought.

The issue lies in people who think the pinnacle of fantasy is Harry Potter, Tolkien mimics, and mainstream anime. And people who can't read anything above a high school reading level.

Nice-looking primordial ooze and steam. It's so rich in bizarre sensations.

The story of Ubbo-Sathla and how it might connect with Abhoth and Smith's Archetypes always fascinated me. I bet the Elder Things kept their most secret recipes on those stones.
