Description This works as a choker or tiara (but it's really heavy!).
All fine silver (99.9% silver).

This one was largely experimental, testing my skills with flowers.

Thanks! Fine silver is soft, but not too soft. There's a nice ethic feel to it too. Sterling silver is way too hard to do these roses and leaves with. hee hee hee.

haha :/ i like both silvers lol but i usually wear sterling. which one is more expensive, silver?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Klyph In reply to thewyteangel [2006-05-13 06:39:30 +0000 UTC]

Fine silver is more expensive sometimes by up to 25% because of the silver content. Sterling silver only has 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper or other alloys. Fine silver is pure silver, nothing added.

Fine silver tarnishes slower, and is easier to clean and shine. Most people use sterling silver for jewelry because it's harder, but the real secret is that sterling silver is good for casting because it's less expensive (you lose a lot of silver when you cast silver from a wax mold -- which is the most popular method today).

But if you're like me, where you have to make sheets of silver to shape into flowers and leaves, sterling silver will simply break under the pressure. Fine silver will sculp almost like clay.

Rich? No, but I live in Thailand and my uncle is a silversmith so that becomes second nature. I don't have alluminium to work with... we have to import them. At the moment, I'm only limited to silver.

I was reading some earlier comments and I don't think you should melt it down. I bet you could sell it. Its too lovely to destroy. Art like it is too rare these days. If I had the money, I would buy probably buy it (but I also have to overcome my frugal nature, too).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ytak In reply to Klyph [2006-05-13 15:48:16 +0000 UTC]

Um, I was wondering, how did you get it that shiney? And is oxidation (tarnishing) an issue?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Klyph In reply to ytak [2006-05-15 04:37:49 +0000 UTC]

Silver just needs a little tumbling to get it shiny. Because this is silver, tumbling with rice is enough - billard balls are too hard.

Oxidation is always an issue with silver. But fine silver is a little easier to clean than sterling silver. I put my slightly tarnished pieces in the laundery and it's shiny as new. Unorthodox, but works -- two birds with one stone!

ytak In reply to Klyph [2006-05-16 02:24:33 +0000 UTC]

Doesn't that remove some of the silver? I've wondered if there is some sort of clear, thin ploymer that could be used to coat silver so it doesn't oxidize and retains it color.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Klyph In reply to ytak [2006-05-16 08:54:45 +0000 UTC]

There is. Silver can either be coated in lacquer or wax to prevent oxidization. As far as I know, the lacquer or wax does wear off and it only makes cleaning the silver more difficult.

Don't worry about removing some of the silver during clearning, it's a very, very, tiny bit.

This is unbelievably gorgeous... It looks really delicate for being metal. I can't imagine how one would go about silversmithing

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Klyph In reply to LordoftheSporks [2006-05-13 09:02:25 +0000 UTC]

Silversmithing is not too hard. One of my 'tips of the trade' for making the flowers look like real flowers is using fine silver - that's pure silver - and not use sterling silver. Because sterling silver has about 7.5% added copper or other alloys, it's not as soft - breaks instantly under my hammer - and is very hard to control.
