Do you still sew on the original pattern lines or do you sew on the seam allowance?

It depends on the pattern you're using. Check the packaging, some patterns already have the seam allowance added into the pattern. For example, if a pattern says a 5/8th inch seam allowance is included, the edge of a cut out pattern piece needs to be lined up with the 5/8th inch mark on the sewing machine in order to keep the seam allowance consistent.
