Well, that all depends
In this pic, the blue one is Frenzy and the red/black one is Rumble and those are the colours the toys came in (and I loved the Rumble toy as a kid so this is my standard for them)
But in the cartoon, due to a production error they just stuck with, the colours were swapped and Rumble was traditionally blue.
So there's been a HUUUUGE fight on the internet over the past, i dunno, 15 years over which is which. And they get NASTY about it, lol.

Frenzy is the RED one. Why does everyone get that mixed up?

lol I always went with Rumble as the red one because the toy was red and he was the only one I had and was always one of my fave Transformers toy as a kid so I've always stuck with the toy colouring, whenever I colour these guys

What did you use to render this? From first glance it looks like google sketchup. If it was sketchup then give me your skills D:
Bad internet manners aside, brilliant work. Instant favorite definitely.

lol, naw, never gotten around to trying Sketchup, this was actually modelled 3D studio max, I had a plugin for it of version of a program called Swift 3D which did the cel render lines, which were imported into Macromedia (now Adobe) Flash where I got to tweak the lines and fix any problems. I haven't really done the cel render stuff in a few years, but I do still do the 3d modelling to block out things and then print em out as placeholders so I can draw them by hand on my light board, keeps everything where its supposed to be in a scene or whatnot, so I can stop being so OCD about "no! this is in the wrong spot!" and have to restart for the 50th time, lol

If frenzy is throwing horns he dees his figures to face the viewer.

lol, it was just a last-minute thing I added back when I was cel rendering, heh. It was like "hmm, it needs "something" more..." :-P

From what I've seen its 13,000 yen over there, which equals out to about 185 dollars Canadian.

if you're redering these guys in 3d you really need to start posting full turnarounds.
Your stuff is awesome.

thanks, yo!
yah, I'm planning on getting some turnarounds done of future stuff, I want to do like "fake" animation turnarounds of various characters. Make it like a mini design concept project for fun

Deviblue In reply to KrisSmithDW [2008-10-13 20:46:34 +0000 UTC]
the reason I ask is i've been looking for some really good reference to do some maquette style figurines of the TF:A Characters.
If I can find some good animated style doctor who art I'll be busy for years

KrisSmithDW In reply to Deviblue [2008-10-14 11:48:47 +0000 UTC]
then you just may be in luck i am planning on doing a big chunk of TF:A character turnarounds VERY soon (I'm actually started working on Sentinel Prime right now, hoping to have that done very soon) in amongst the other TF turnarounds I want to do. You're more than welcome to use 'em
If there's something like specific you're looking for or would need in a turnaround reference I'd be glad to help, I'm doing turnarounds of them anyways, so I wouldn't be going out of my way or anything :-P
this is an old out of date example (and he's just standing there doing nothing, lol) [link] and there's technically a 3d model under there, lol. The artwork itself is all hand drawn, but I start out with a simple 3d model that matches the right dimensions/shape of all the parts (like a weird action figure or something like that) that I pose and get the right camera angle/perspective. Then I draw over it. I'm weird like that, but this is basically my "new" form of cel-rendering, lol
I checked out your gallery and WOW!! I could NEVER make sculptures like that, I tried once year ago, was all lumpy xD That nasty nurse one looks phenominal!
You'd definately be able to make WICKED TF:A maquettes, you've got such a good handle on animation-styled characters Those will be awesome to see when finished
um, yah, this was much longer than I originally thought, sorry, lol :-P

Thanks, I'm always trying to bettermyself and the nurse isn't even the best I can do...I've got a ton of stuff I need to upload and projects I'm still working on.
I seem to have plenty time to work on stuff at the moment too what with redundancy and all. Creating an opportunity for myself to increase my portfolio.
I think I'll go add some stuff now.

Nice work! I've never really noticed these two much, but they are a pretty cool pair. I like the symmetry of their poses, but also how they aren't identical. It gives them personality.

yeah, they very much are :-P Always loved those toys, wish i still had em XD
i thought a while back of doing a new version of this piece but seeing as STILL its my most popular and everyone seems to love it, so I quickly changed my mind to "no i think i'll leave it. keeping good karma and all" :-P

It could always just be a "redux" or something. The original could be the "classic" version.
Or, better yet, upload it in two seperate parts! No one would be the wiser.
