Description These photos are NOT mine and I do not claim them as such.
Some were emailed to me from fox breeders, and some were found on various websites.

Here's sort of a 'real' version of my Fox Color chart I did way back [link]

These are just of the Red Fox color mutations, both wild and ranched, and how I classify each color.
Color names may differ between different people, and each color can differ from lighter or darker than the shown examples.

I gathered up one photo of each color mutation I could find of live, unpelted foxes. It's missing a few colors from my drawn chart, but I could not find any live photos of those colors.

Wild: Colors that occur in the wild naturally, no human interference.
Ranched: Colors created through domestication and selective breeding. They do NOT occur in the wild naturally.
Many ranched foxes have lost much of their natural instincts and would not survive very long in the wild. It would be like setting your chihuahua free to fend for itself.

I wouldn't say those other colors can't exist in the wild. I saw a photo of a wild red fox that was totally brown(golden-brown) like an "amber" and "burgundy" fox believe it or not.
There are different kinds of color mutations in the wild, though rare.

very beautyful! I just have one question;
Does all of the ranch-bred foxes have the white tip on the tail? Thank you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Krissyfawx In reply to Black-Diamond-Stock [2011-09-21 19:00:06 +0000 UTC]

Certain colors almost always have the white tipped tail, such as the platinums and whitemarks. Other than that, no For example, I have an Amber Fox pelt that has no white tipped tail.

I saw a picture on flickr of wild foxes with three colors in a litter--red, silver, and burgundy/chocolate (which I thought wasn't supposed to occur). But what one of my friends says is that it'd have to be inbred to produce the burgundy color, then again, they do live on an island...

yup ^^ breed a whitemark or a platinum with a cross fox, and with a few generations of perfecting the color, you get yourself a calico or platinum cross

these are a couple breeders I know of.

Though before even considering a pet fox, I'd suggest researching as much as you can about owning one and the Laws and Regulations of your state and city. Too many people don't know what they're getting into when they get one, and end up neglecting them or giving them up to rescues. It's just like owning any other exotic pet. They have advanced needs that must be met

I can honestly say I'm not a big fan of fur farms, even if the animals are well cared for

I prefer getting my pelts from the animals when they were caught in the wild.

There are some absolute gorgeous pelts, but I really couldn't buy from a furfarm D;

Krissyfawx In reply to Nukawin [2011-01-18 22:07:46 +0000 UTC]

I understand some people's disagreement with fur farms, as I used to be part of that crowd a ways back lol

I'm not posting these to promote fur farms or whatnot. I only posted these to show the different colors Red Fox can come in Just a color chart, nothing more ^^

Nukawin In reply to Krissyfawx [2011-01-18 22:10:05 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I hated fur in general but being with #Anti-Wolf made me realise the importance of hunting in general, and in a sense why let the fur go to waste? I can own it but I refuse to wear it! x3

And I knew that, you've provided me with some foxes I've never even seen before! They're magnificent, tho its a shame they're furfarm animals 8C

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Krissyfawx In reply to Nukawin [2011-01-18 23:27:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I was one of those teenagers that were lured in by PETA lol Then I actually took the time to research stuff, and threw that peta crap into the garbage lol

Not all of the ranched foxes pictured are from a fur farm. a few of them are from a reputable USDA licensed breeder I know, who breeds them and other exotics as pets :3

If you live in a state that allows domestic foxes as pets, yes Depends on your state's regulations, then you have to check with your city's regulations. It could be totally legal in your state, but not always in the city or county you live in
