Description
I woke up that morning with hopes for beautiful lenticular clouds, a nice magenta sun tone, and a BIG SUN rising. I got the exact opposite - stormy weather. Oh well, I still took a couple of photographs. I hope you like the selective dodging and burning. Anyone care to critique? Here are some other waterscapes you may like:

First off, very well composed. Your eye is instantly drawn to the bicyclist, and then the shadow leads into the water ripples, which really add a sense of motion. The beach jutting in on the left does a good job of balancing the rider out without being too distracting.
I think that black and white works well here, both in terms of adding a feeling to the piece and also for putting a little bit more focus on the great composition. I do feel like there's a bit too much negative space on the top right, but that's more of a personal preference, and not really an issue with the shot as a whole. You might be able to burn the wispy little cloud bits on the top right (set to midtones) to fill the shot in a bit more, unless of course it's intentional, in which case, ignore that e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

It is strange that the BW image turns the mood of the pictureβit should be alarming, or even frightening with all the signs of the storm, but it is radiating tranquility and peace. The biker's strange behaviour turns into an absolutely casual act, the water reflections into a soothing geometric pattern and clouds are just drapes on the sky. And this is good, this is timeless and ethereal.
The details of the composition are also interesting. While the horizontal lines dominate the image, it is strongly based to the diagonal from top left to bottom right. The "clothes" of clouds, the rainstorm, the bikerβthey are drawn into a single diagonal line and define a slowing-down, easing-out mood that would be an A Minor if it would be music. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sβ¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="
" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title="
(Smile)"/> The well-balanced horizont divides the space and define the time of the image, too: what is in the front that represents the present, what is above, represents a bit hazy, not exactly known future. The biker facing to the edge of the image (instead of the centre) seems to ride off the scene to avoid the storm, but the stance, the small ripples of the water suggest no hurry. He knows that he has enough time to leave. The arms position even suggests some nonchalant happyness as if he enjoying himself by knowing he will reach the cover before the storm arrives. The landbridge from the left even serve as a road post to show the direction.

For the toning of the picture: in colours this may be a bit more dramatic, and a lot more casual. The light overall tone tunes the mood into a lighthearted hope, though the hard contrasts of the horizon remembers the observer that the scene is not so overly peaceful. The dimmed greys of the clouds, equalized to a silky or painterly backdrop lay stress the spatial and temporal distance. The darks on the left and the strands of rain counterpoint this and make their alarm note about the dangers of the storm.
I don't know the original shot so I don't really know what did you alter by selective dodging and burning, but I assume you did it well, because the image has its intact balance, both in colours and designs. It has a definite direction that make me wonder how would it read for a visitor of a different culture (e.g. writing from right to left, living on the other hemisphere, etc. β you may want to visit my poll and journal about how we read a picture).
Two minor and not really important things I would alter a bit: the biker is too dark for me (perhaps it is affected by the dA colours around the image), and the clouds and the sky is a bit too light. It is just a nick of difference. Even the sea would bear some more contrast in the front but that is not so important. I have the feeling that the overall impact is diminished by the relative lack of the overall contrast while I have to admit that by tone range the image has it very well. This is why I rate the impact to 4 stars. I took half star for the small size that make harder to observe the details that might be important, and eliminate the effect of the dA green surroundings. Rider on the sea is not so original theme, but if it is a biker, it has a nice twist, so I rated originality over the average. The image miss that wow-factor that I would honour with a fiver, but is really fair. As vision I rated the composition because I like the delicate nuances I detailed above, and that form most of the impact.
Thank you for sharing this nice image!
(How did you expect lenticular clouds? They are forming over lonely high peaks usually.... or am I wrong? Where did you shot this scene?)

Me too! I still have to select a B&W filter action (digitally). I use Photoshop Creative Cloud now. I was skeptical about it initially, because I was used to CS4, but this new version is so incredibly fast and smooth. I love it.
