Sort of...

Instead of Mario being lazy because of plot. Mario is his happy go lucky self from the games.
While Luigi, after spending years in Mario's shadow gave up the hero business and became a Novel writer.
Mario is trying to get Luigi to come be a hero with him, like the old days.
