In the japanese manga, Misa calls him 'Light', but he corrects her, saying his name is 'raito', (sounds like light-o when pronounced right) which is japanese for light.

Ok, I'm not sure if I have this completely right, and if anyone sees any mistakes, please correct me! I am not an expert, this is just from what I've noticed.
I think it's because in Japanese, 'l' and 'r' sound very similar, and they often add 'o' or 'u' at the end some words. For example, (the first one is sort of a stereotype, but it was the only one that I could think of...) 'hello' would be 'haro''backpack' would be 'bakpaku' and 'doorknob' would be 'dornobu' (these are NOT the translation, just how it is pronounced).
If you watch the original Japanese version, you will hear that his name is pronounced 'Raito', (but I have no idea how it is spelled in Japanese) so some people like to use this instead of his English name 'Light' because it gives whatever they're writing a more Japanese feel to it.
