“C'mon, Luigi! We can't let them get away!”

The two princess-rescuing plumbers chased tirelessly after their sworn enemies' kids. Earlier, Lemmy and Iggy, the twin-like sons of Bowser, had stolen one of the Toadstool's royal family heirlooms and proceeded to take it back to their castle in the Darklands. But Mario and Luigi were determined to get it back before such time, and continuously followed them. The red clad hero noticed Iggy suddenly look back at them and told Lemmy an inaudible piece of information. Mario noticed Lemmy grin with glee, and the two misfits suddenly stopped heading back to their home. They took a sharp turn to the left, catching the Mario Bros. off guard, but followed them anyways. They chased the two Koopalings for a good two or so minutes before they saw them enter a rather mysterious warp pipe. Once neither of them were no longer visible, Mario and Luigi finally realized where that warp pipe headed.

“Mario, that pipe leads to the real world!” Luigi confirmed with worry present in his voice. He huffed a little from being out of breath, but eventually caught it again. “Something really bad might happen!”

“Well then, we'll just have to follow them!” Without another word, both jumped in and headed into the real world. The other end of the pipe turned out to be one of the sink pipes of someone's house, the door having been left completely opened. The two climbed out and ran through the house, looking for the door. When they found it, they spotted two people hugging each other for dear life, as if they had just seen a ghost. Mario stopped for a moment.

“Hey, didja see two turtle-like kids with rainbow colored hair come through here?” he questioned. The two nodded, too petrified to say a word. They obviously had never seen such a thing before. “Didja see which way they went?”

The man pointed to the right, then continued to embrace his presumed wife. Mario nodded, and the two quickly bolted after the two Koopalings. Because they had procrastinated for a bit, they had a bit of ground to catch up, so they ran as fast as they could down the sidewalk, maneuvering through the crowds of people. The first alley they spotted, they went through, as the kids probably made a complicated route for them to follow. They followed it until they came to a fork in the road, one of the paths leading to a dead end. Mario led them both down the continuing path until they came to another split path. After spotting some ripped cobwebs, they knew which path to take.

The chase must've lasted at least fifteen minutes after they caught sight of them again. The two spotted Lemmy and Iggy climbing out of the alleyway and onto the streets. They ran to the right, giving a small window of opportunity to catch up. As they were just about to jump up to the ledge, they saw Lemmy run up to the opening again, without Iggy, and taunted them.

“Hey losers! If ya want this back,” Lemmy held up the heirloom, “you're gonna have to catch me!” He stuck his tongue out at them and ran off, Iggy no where in sight. At the moment, neither could care – all that mattered now was that they got that heirloom back safe and sound. Quickly, the two jumped onto the ledge and sprinted after the smaller Koopa, who had a huge lead on them. Suddenly, after hearing Iggy yell from the other side of the street, Lemmy tossed the heirloom over to him. Though, the throw was rather short ranged, as it hit one of the cars passing by and landed right in the middle of traffic. The two kids had visibly shocked expressions on their face, as that probably wasn't part of their plan. Before they could catch up, Lemmy ran right into the street as fast as he could, just barely dodging the oncoming cars, and picked up the stolen heirloom. Turning back to see the Mario Bros. catching up, he sprinted over to the other side of the street with no regard of the speeding vehicles.

“Lemmy, LOOK OUT!!” They heard Iggy shout.

Everyone saw it coming except for the smallest Koopa. Just as he was almost to the other side of the street, a rather large freight truck came speeding his way, the driver obviously not seeing his small frame. Watching the scene from the opposite sidewalk, the other cars blocked the image, but a large thud was audible, as well as the screeching of tires. After glancing at each other for a second, Mario and Luigi rushed over to the crash, dodging the oncoming traffic. But what was before their eyes was not exactly what they were expecting to see.

Iggy, sprawled a few yards away from the actual truck, was laying lifelessly on the street. Blood oozed out of his head, arm, side, leg, and even his tail. The glasses he was wearing were now broken- no, shattered, as some of the pieces of the broken lens were laying out on the street. His bright green shell was cracked in many places, the spikes on it now each cracked and broken. And shaking his motionless body, Lemmy, now on his knees, trying to get Iggy to open his eyes again.

“C'mon Iggy... wake up... please wake up...”

Other than a scraped elbow, Lemmy was left unharmed by the whole thing. Mario guessed that Iggy somehow took the hit for him, therefore the one on the ground instead of his older but smaller brother. Tears fell from his eyes, his lip quivering as he choked on his own words.

“Iggy, wake up! Come on...” Lemmy shook him more viciously than before, but still no effect. No response came from the younger Koopa, nor any movement. Mario walked up to the two and knelt down. Cautiously, he spread his two fingers onto Iggy's wrist, feeling for a pulse. Though, his heart broke when he found nothing. Biting his lip, he looked up at Luigi, who had just about the same amount of concern as he did. Just seeing Mario's face made him realize the horrible truth before he even spoke it.

“H-he's dead...”

Hearing those words, Lemmy just cried even more. “No...” He collapsed onto Iggy's side and sobbed into it. Mario suddenly felt remorse for what just happened, and was surprised just how much he actually cared about the two kids. Letting silence fill the air for a few minutes, reality set in as cars started honking. He looked up to Luigi again.

“Weege, we gotta take them back to Bowser,” he stated, his voice low.

“But he'll be furious!” Luigi gulped. They both expected it – Bowser would probably blame his son's death on them, and would probably try to kill them for it. But he deserved to know, even with the dire consequences. Seeing the look on Mario's face made Luigi realize that, and he sighed, kneeling down to pick Lemmy up.

“It's my fault... It's all my fault!” he sobbed into Luigi's shirt. Mario picked up the stolen heirloom and handed it to his younger brother before picking Iggy's dead body up. The two walked back the way they came, going back to the warp pipe they originally exited from. Mario knew it was going to be a long, sad journey to the Darklands, but they needed to go, for Bowser's sake, and for his kids' sake.

i knew i'd eventually bloodify the Mario series. and we all know i like a character when i decide to kill them. poor Iggy - he has fallen victim to my curse.

but don't worry! i have much more happy and cheery story ideas coming soon! you know... without character death.
