My first attempt at actually drawing something with graphite pencils! It was certainly an interesting experience, and though it is far from perfect I'm content with it.... my next piece will just have to be better
Couldn't find the original reference photo (came across it on Pinterest and forgot to save the link!), but wanted to say that I used it for practice only.
Used the ancient 'grid system' to transfer from computer to paper.... if anyone would like to know more then feel free to ask
Post work touch up done with GIMP to remove a few minor mistakes.
Any advice on shading, or just general tips for working with graphite pencils, is most welcome! I'm eager to learn anything anyone has to share with me

It looks great! - Really 3D!
It's not easy capture roundness of the flower... IĀ think You don't need to be afraid of adding more black or leaving some places totally white -(I see You have done that so nice on the top, the front petals could be even more shaded ,well I don't have my self experiences in it..., but I can see the edges on upper petals are more defined then rest - they make it look more clear - standing out from background...)
Ā I don't mean to make outlines,because the edge of the petal on the right side up is made white and it also works super well.
Overall the back - up petals seem to stand out more than front ones...
I hope You don't mind me saying this,but I thought it might help,especially that You asked about opinions...

Keep drawing,and try different things,even just let go the hand and see where it will drive the graphites - there You will have great opportunity to try strong contrasts...

more of them habry...
It is one of my favorite field flowers and in Poland we have them a lot,so it reminds me my country very much...
I changed the avatar for 2 reasonsn...
1 - since long I wanted to change it because I drew this design but colors are added by mu son in the computer...so it is not 100% mine work... - somehow that is important to me...
2 - more recent reason is that LGBT pride...
I am upset that the geys took rainbow as them flag,becsuse rainbow belong to children and it is very important part of education - now it is associated with sexual preferences! How they planing to explain that to the little children!!!???!!!
I went there on that profile where they promote that pride here on dA on top of notifications page...and I told them to give back the rainbow yo the children!
Now I don't want to use rainbow colors to define myself cause anubody might think that I am gey too...and even if I have nothing against who they do it with - I don't want to be associated with this movement because I am not gey and it not speack for me... though first it was sign of so called hippies - children of tge Mother Earth - who care about tge Nature! - which I have lot more to do with and it opsets me that now it got other meaning than it had before...
I always devended geys because I understand what happened to them...
I have seen documentary,where they explan that many people start a life in the woomb as a twins! But in very early stage one embrion can absorbe other embrion into own cells and they they gow as one but if they had oposite sexes than can very easy start the cofusion of them identity from very first years of life - it is not them fault! But niw they demand acceptance while they can't respect others opinions themselves! They are very untolerant!
Many attacked me even just for grammar - so they expext me to accept them wird stuff while they can't accept nothing from others!
