Description
edit: Uploaded with a much better version. Hopefully this one will catch your guys' attention better. @_@Umm... my art project for my figure drawing class? I know, emphasis on figure. Here's the thing, the project is REALLY vague and my professor is already impressed with my figure drawing ability so, for me, these projects are more about expanding my imagination and characters than practicing drawing the human figure. We do that every class period anyway.
Assignment: "Choose an archetypal figure, group, personal state of mind that interests you. Your subject matter might be based on a song, movie, literature, video game, personal experience, etc. Think about ways you might depict that subject. It could be an implied narrative, or an individual. Sketch out your first ideas with vitality and immediacy. Don't censor yourself at all. Lay it on. Then come back to them and reconsider. Is your depiction too dramatic or didactic? Not ridiculous enough? Open to interpretation, or too obvious. How might you create a sense of ambiguity, or humor, or truth about your subject? Does it feel like your idea, or ideas you've learned? Experiment again in your sketchbook. Consider some of the suggestions on the back of this sheet. How might a different technique, process, iconography, or attitude to your subject alter your intent, and our reading of your subject?"
(I mean. Gerbils are ambiguous. Right?)
Archetype: The Orphan/The Victim/The Kidnapped
Made Ambiguous: Not rescued. (...Also a gerbil.)
Here's the "story" behind it: This is (name unknown, we'll call her Ariadne). She is a black gerbil. She lives with her father who is very wealthy and runs a very large business of some sort. Unfortunately, Ariadne's father is not such a nice man and is somehow either embezzling money, trafficking, etc. SOMETHING TO MAKE THE PEOPLE ON THE OTHER END REALLY MAD. So they hire some pirates (this is a world of small animals, NOT THE WORLD OF REDWALL KTHX) to kidnap his right-hand-man, a Chinchilla. When the pirates get there, they're like, wait, this guy has a kid, of course he is going to pay ransom for his kid, we can make twice as much and keep like %75 of it for ourselves! So they snatch her up and send Daddy a note. At the port, Ariadne is ordered to wait out in the open. If she sees her father, she is not to go to him. Her father is to hand the money to a gangley-looking frog with a blue cap on and say "You left this behind." Only then can he go to Ariadne and carry her off. She cannot move. How will they know? Because half the pirates are unknown pirates so they're just all hanging out all over the freaking place.
So what happens?
Well. 4:00 rolls by.
Then 4:30.
Then 5:00.
Then 6:00.
In essence, How would you feel if you were kidnapped and no one showed up to pay your ransom?
Daddy must have been in deep trouble.
Now, see, the pirates are all upset because for one thing, they don't get any money, second, their employers don't get any money and third, they are stuck with this kid who is like traumatized for life and won't stop crying. They can't just be like, "ok, go home," I mean, they kidnapped her after all. That would just be silly. So they set sail and dump her off in some little town and move on. A week later they come back. Some of the boys are just hanging out, enjoying themselves, when lo and behold, there's Ariadne, filthy, hungry, and still crying. Being the softies that they are, they decide to sneak her on board, give her a place to sleep, food, etc. They know that if the captain finds out he'll be all mad and then they'll have to REALLY get rid of her. But, of course, captain does find out and, well, what do you know, Capp'n's an old softy too! So now you've got a ship full of pirates and an 8-year-old gerbil who hates her father. EXPEDITION TIME!

YAY GERBILS!
Oooh, can one of the unknown pirates be a guinea pig? A guinea pig would make a bad-ass pirate. (lol yeah, I understand you're not gonna continue with this or anything and this is just a one-time picture, but omg a guinea pig pirate would be so freaking cool)
