I picked up Valerie from her place. We hopped on my motorcycle and rode through the backroads of the woods to my place. I lean down when riding my sports bike; she tends to sit upright against the seat rest I installed for her. I saw a shining line horizontal above he road and felt something graze the top of my helmet right after but thought nothing of it. That is, until we got to my place. Whatever line I saw and felt must have been a wire level with Valerie’s neck. After freaking out that her head was gone, she shocked me by getting off the bike and blindly finding my arm. I led her decapitated body into my home. How was she alive? I couldn’t tell if her excited bouncing was ignorant joy or wordless panic. Should I leave her here and search for the roads for the helmet her head is in? Should I bring her with me? If someone put that line there on purpose, is it even safe to go back? Would they have taken her head and ran? As I was frozen in thought, Valerie took off her backpack and threw it on the floor where she always does. She extended her arms and shakily walked to find me, then held me, rubbing my back. Valerie didn’t seem panicked, but I was still at a crossroads on what to do about my newly headless girlfriend.
