Description
I was not going to submit this piece, because I don't see it as anywhere as being actual art, but ~RickDanger asked me to submit it. I really don't like doing art with borrowed background, but between exams and a tight deadline for the competition, I had no other choice.Anyway, this is my submission for the Shiro Kumo PBeM RPG Peach Blossom Festival - the theme are the court characters. Instead of just doing a portrait, I decided to go for the scene approach: Lady Shikkon teaching her young daughter (my character) the court dances.
This picture doesn't make me very happy, but whatever. About 3 days of work in the computer, and more or less the same to do the line work, inking included.
What I like best? The shadows they both cast. I suck so much at doing shadows, that I had to come up with a technique that would work well for it. And by accident, I discovered it.

Hmm, background doesn't seem to fit perfect...I wish I could tell you something to make it look like it belongs better, but I have trouble with these things too! lol
You kimono look good tho. The mother's patterns is slightly ...hrmmm....spotty? It doesn't blend in as well...I'd say burring it a tid bit might help.

Yes, to me they seems bit like cardboard cutouts.... I should have made bolder shadows. And the spotty kimono? Let's just say I'm such a lazy git! I could have made it blend it much better... but nooooo, it needs too much work.

Those shadows are darn impressive. Also, I love the colouring on their hair! Lovely work.

Awwww, thanks. Coloring their hair was a pain in the butt, because I didn't know how to make it in jet black. I mean, if you have brown or red hair, you can always use a darker shade to give an impression of shadows. But how can you do that with black hair? So I had to improvise a little.

Socks! Cute! Wow!
Your character has got really long hair, the kind I always dreamed of when I was a kid and my mother cut my hair like a boy's. And her arm is kind of chubby, which makes it all the more realistic. I don't think that the background looks borrowed at all, which means you made it blend well. And the shadows are really impressive. Good work!

SOCKS???? Rofl, you're so cute! ^^
When I was little I also wanted to have long hair, but I always had it shoulder length and with bangs I hated. And children are often chubby - especially because their heads are much larger than an addult's when compared with the rest of the body. So it gives the impression that her arm is shorter than it actually is.
