Victoria Jubilee Hall

Au début de 1898, alors que les travaux de la bibliothèque étaient en cours, une pétition signée par plus de 300 résidants fut présentée au Conseil municipal, dans laquelle on réclamait la construction d’un centre municipal destiné aux assemblées publiques, une salle pour les rencontres amicales, un gymnase, une piscine et une piste de curling.

À cette époque, les seuls locaux publics existants étaient ceux du Elm Hall. Mis à part celles du Club de curling Heather, on comptait peu d’installations sportives intérieures. Réceptif à l’idée de construire un centre communautaire, le Conseil décida toutefois de ne pas y inclure de piste de curling, mais consentit, sous d’autres rapports, à construire l’installation ainsi que demandé.

Une somme de 25 000 $ fut allouée à ce projet, somme un peu plus généreuse que celle qui avait été accordée à la construction de la bibliothèque, mais qui, étant donné les installations prévues, était à peine plus considérable. On choisit un emplacement à proximité de la bibliothèque où l’on entreprit des travaux de construction. En 1899, le Victoria Jubilee Hall ouvrait officiellement ses portes au public.

Premier auditorium municipal du Canada, le Victoria Jubilee Hall est un pionnier de par sa structure dessiné par Robert Findlay, le Victoria Jubilee Hall, en utilisant le même style et les mêmes matériaux que la bibliothèque. Il abritait une salle d’assemblée publique, une loge, une salle d’exercices militaires, une allée de quilles, une salle de billard, un gymnase et une piscine. Il fut détruit par un incendie en 1924.

Le second centre communautaire érigé, en 1925, à cet endroit fut construit en pierre dans le style néo-Tudor par le cabinet d’architectes Hutchison et Wood. Le grès fut utilisé pour les détails gothiques, soit la tour crénelée flanquée de quatre tourelles de coin, l’oriel surplombant les portes ogivales et les contreforts des deux ailes. Ce nouveau centre abritait un vaste foyer avec un balcon et une scène où l’on présentait des danses et des spectacles. On y trouvait une loge maçonnique à l’étage. En 1998, le Victoria Hall a fait l’objet de travaux exhaustifs de rénovation et de restauration réalisés par le cabinet d’architectes Fournier, Gersovitz et Moss. La ville y offre des cours et des concerts et y tient des réunions et des activités sociales.

In early 1898, when the work of the library were underway, a petition signed by over 300 residents was presented to City Council, in which it demanded the construction of a civic center for public meetings, a room for friendly meetings, a gym, pool and curling rink.

At that time, the only existing public buildings were those of Elm Hall. Apart from those of the Heather Curling Club, there were few indoor sports facilities. Receptive to the idea of building a community center, however the Council decided not to include curling rink, but consented, in other respects, to construct the facility as requested.

A sum of $ 25 000 was allocated to this project, a little more generous amount than had been given to the construction of the library, but, given the planned facilities, was barely significant. They choose a location near the library where they began construction. In 1899, the Victoria Jubilee Hall was officially opened to the public.

Canada's first municipal auditorium, Victoria Jubilee Hall is a pioneer in structure designed by Robert Findlay, the Victoria Jubilee Hall, using the same style and same materials as the library. It housed a public assembly hall, a lodge, a military drill hall, a bowling alley, a billiard room, gymnasium and swimming pool. It was destroyed by fire in 1924.

The second community center erected, in 1925, here was built of stone in the neo-Tudor style by the architectural firm Hutchison and Wood. The sandstone was used for the Gothic details, is the crenellated tower flanked by four turrets corner, the oriel window overlooking the arched gateways and the foothills of the two wings. The new center housed a spacious foyer with a balcony and a stage where they presented dances and shows. There were a Masonic lodge upstairs. In 1998, the Victoria Hall was the subject of extensive work of renovation and restoration work carried out by the architectural firm Fournier, Gersovitz and Moss. The city will offer courses and concerts and it holds meetings and social activities.
