Description
This man is a saddle maker from Karachi, Pakistan, whom I met in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. He was making a small living in repairing shoes on the street, at his spot near the Old Basaar and the central bus station. He sat on a mat directly on the sidewalk, his tools (sewing needles of different sizes, yarn of different materials, several new soles and clasps) fitted into a small plastic bag.
Neither of us spoke the language of the other one, he spoke Urdu and a bit of Arabic, I only spoke English. Still somehow we managed to learn a bit of the other one's life.
Drinking tea he asked friends of his to buy from a stall near the old basaar we tried to converse with hands and feet and drawings in the dust, sometimes helped along by a few translations into broken English by passing-by customers.
I went back twice, always hoping to be allowed to take his portrait. The third time he allowed it, but he wouldn't let me photograph him with his tools or at work. I had to wait until he had put everything away and had arranged himself, and then indicated me that he was ready. When this shot was taken the sun was already setting and a lot of the light was provided by street lamps.
He was set to leave the UAE again soon after my last visit as he didn't have a permanent visa.
Sometimes I'm asking myself how he is, and where.

In my defense, I am not always proficient at eyeballing a person's ethnic heritage at first glance .
Anyhow, fun fact: he played Mulai Ahmed er Raisuni in the film "The Wind and the Lion".

If you go... do you think it would be possible for you to print the photograph and take it with you? Just in case you're going to meet him?

The story behind this piece is profound. It's almost like... you can't judge a book by its cover.
That said, lovely portrait. I like the depth of field and the lighting cast onto his shirt and whatnot.

You never can judge a book by its cover, all the more if the specific book is a person...
Thank you, this actually was my first portrait on my back-then new camera, and technically I'm not too happy with it, there's so many flaws to it...

could shift the frame more to the left. But I admire your enthusiasm because i still find it difficult to photograph strangers..There are so many amazing sights I see on the street I see everyday..most of the time I dont have a cam on me but when I do I still 'shy' away
Hope I do a real street shot soon..

Well, as said, he wasn't a stranger at that point anymore, and yes... it was a bit difficult getting myself into the mind set in the first place. But it was funny, I was re-packing my stuff near him and he just motioned to me to come over and sit there, and so we started talking. As I wrote, I went back to see him two weekends consecutively before he allowed me to take the shot.
And yes, on the photographic technique side I'm not too proud of it...

There wasn't actually anything nice to see around him, and I wanted to take in his whole upper body because he had actually set himself up all straight etc, so I didn't want to miss out on showing this in the photograph.

He looks a lot like my old chemistry professor! And Sean Connory.
I really like the light over his portrait. I think it compliments his skin tone.

It's true, I thought the same about his likeness to Sean Connery! I don't know about your old chemistry professor, of course
I had to slightly adjust the white balance in this shot as the camera had troubles with picking it out correctly in the lighting conditions I had.

I think it's great you two were able to talk to each other even though there was no common language. Everyone should try to understand each other that way.

Yes I admit it was sort of frustrating and even somewhat embarrassing sometimes, but in the end I loved it.
