Abstract and Surreal Photography Weekend
Hello Everyone!
I'm going to show you how I create my floating teacup photos. For this process all you will need is a tripod and Photoshop or some other similar photo editing software. This is the photo we will be creating:
Before we begin...
So that you get an idea of how I create these I'm going to give you a short explanation. I don't like hanging teacups from wires because I have broken way too many that way! Instead I actually hold them (or get someone else to) in the position that I want them to be in. After I've gotten a picture of the teacups that I'm satisfied with I take a photo of just the background to fill in where my arms and hands are later. Allow me to elaborate....
To begin find the area you want to take the photo in and set up your camera and tripod. It is very important to keep your camera and tripod in the same place, it will make the editing process much easier. Play around with the position of the cup and take lots of photos so you see what works and what doesn't. A very important tip for holding the cups or plates, do not wrap your fingers around them. If you do you won't be able to edit them out correctly. Example:
After you figure out a way to hold it that works for you and you've shot something you're happy with you'll need to take an image of just the background alone. It's important that you don't change the focus point when shooting your blank background image or it won't look natural. You should end up with two photos like the ones below:
Now that you have the two photos you are going to using open them up in Photoshop. This is where the real work begins! Take your teacup photo and add it as a layer above your background. It should look like this:
Select the layer with the teacup. Create a layer mask by clicking the button circled in the bottom right corner. We will need this in a later step. Now it's time to select the pen tool and start tracing around the edge of the teacup and what needs to be removed. After selecting the pen tool, circled to the left of the screen, double check that you are on the teacup layer and start tracing. Pick a starting point and continue until you've encircled everything that needs to be removed.
After tracing along the edges you should have something that looks like the image below. Remember the layer mask we made before? Now it's time to use it. With your pen tool still active right click your image. A menu will pop up; you will need to select "Make Selection." Select the layer mask circled in red on the left. We can now start "erasing" the arms.
Use the brush tool on the layer mask to start erasing the selection until the arms are completely removed. Take a look at this .gif for a better before and after comparison. That's it! Now all you have to do is edit it like you would any of your photos.
