Description The young Doctor adjusted the final latch and pulled tight, "There we go. Perfect." She said looking rather pleased with herself.
It was about noon now as the sun shined overhead, peaking through the treetops. The fresh breeze flowed ever so silently as it fluttered the tips of her lab coat. While it was early spring the summer weather came early this year and with it a change of clothes. Not one for fashion an orange tank top and some grey knickers were good enough she guessed. Although, the hike from town was long and her once fine neon shoes and blue striped knee high socks were completely ruined. However, despite them being one of her favor pairs of socks, it matter little as the equipment her companion sat at came to life making several pings and loads of static.
After fiddling with a few knobs and flipping a few switches, either to look important or was actually busy the Doctor couldn't tell. "I do not believe such a device is ready for field testing, let alone used in an actual situation of importance, Doctor Amelia." Said her companion without even taking a glance in her direction.
Amelia smirked. They had been together only a few months and every statement seemed to always be more sarcastic in nature.  She took hold of the knob on the buckle. "Oh pffft. Course its ready Emil. Look, I'll even show you." With a quick twist a large white bubble appeared around her, making it nearly impossible to see her more than just a shadow.
Amelia continued on, "See? The Hazard Deflection belt creates an invincible shield around me, making sure nothing gets in or…out…" Something was strange. The air was suddenly thick and warm. Her lungs quivered and started rejecting her intakes. Her head was spinning and the shadowed world around her was fading. With one last breath she turned the knob on her belt, sparks flew from it and the bubble was gone in an instant.
Amelia took a deep breath as the nice cool air brushed against her skin. "As predicted." droned Emil keeping an eye on the pinging monitors.
"Ok…I may need…make some…slight…modifications." She whispered trying to catch her breath. Emil flipped a switch and gave Amelia a nod as if nothing had happened. The Doctor blew out, readjusted her goggles, and maneuvered to Emil's side. The pinging continued at a steady rate with no change in sight. "Ready then? Good….Good. Have the mining laser?"
Emil motioned to the small hand held gadget at her feet. She quickly pocketed it into her lab coat. "Excellent. Ok, according to the readings we had a type 5, right?"
Emil just looked at her with dull eyes, "Correct, a type 5 magnitude earthquake. According to the reports it ascended from the southern region and hit the area with the end result. However, our sophisticated instruments place the origin here  but the readings were…strange."
"Strange? You're not one to use such vague language." She joked.
Emil sighed but didn't give any indication of irritation. "I believe it fits the situation. This wasn't a natural occurrence." The monitor pinged loudly making the two stop and watch as the calm wavy lines sped up violently. Emil gulped trying to understand the readings.
Amelia slapped the back of Emil, nearly knocking over the chair and her companion with it, "That's what we're here to investigate!" With that she skipped to the mouth of the cave. It was dark, wet, and dripping water echoed from the walls. It was a cave after all.
"As if I had a choice." Emil muttered flipping one last switch, "I've amplified our communicator.  You shouldn't have any static down there." But one look at the cave had already told Emil she was long gone. "…and you forgot to turn it on…again."
A long time ago the good Doctor learned the joy of discovery. Though well watched she'd often have disappeared into darkened areas that many would be too fearful to even acknowledge existed. What could be more exhilarating then feeling the fear, the cold, and the sweat all to glimpse the unknown perils that lie ahead. Thinking about dangers that could or could not be there was irrelevant and only hindered those from seeking what hide just around the next corner.
The cave obviously had once been excavated at one point or another as long forgotten tools lay about covered in rush and cobwebs. The cave itself was natural as the dripping stalactites still covered the cavern, though those at the entrance were obviously broken off due to whatever operation the tools had been intended for. Regardless, after several feet into the ever darkening tunnel was untouched. Whatever intentions that were had long abandoned. After a few sudden turns and a near slip up from the wet floor Amelia found herself in front of a tiny slit in the wall. While the cave did continue on, this one slit nagged at her, as if something was prickling the back of brain. Nodding to herself she retrieved her personal mining laser. It was fantastic device as it heated up solid materials to the point the very atoms were forced to wiggle about, nearly making it into a liquid. However, it was only with the direct concentration of the laser and snapped back to a solid almost immediately afterward. In short, it melted rock.
With a shot from her mining laser, Amelia squeezed through another small opening only to find the ground suddenly dropped off into an endless abyss. She placed her hand upon a wall to get a peak over and could feel the cold emanating from the walls. Ahead she could hear running water, most likely an underground stream. The light from outside had been diminished at least ten minutes or so ago and there seemed to be no sign of it getting lighter from there. She considered, for a moment, to turn back as she lacked both a flashlight and proper equipment to continue farther down.
She suddenly smacked her head, "Ha. What am I thinking. I'll be fine." Taking hold of a sturdy rock she eased herself over the edge, slowly finding footing to descend further into the pitch blackness. The sudden feeling she had was gone almost as if she had stepped through some sort of threshold. The mere thought of this made her smile to herself, onwards. It wasn't long before she touched a flat piece of rock to stand on. Puzzled she let go of the wall to find it wasn't as dark as she recalled. The once claustrophobic walls had shot out making an open cavern.
Ahead she could see a large pile of glowing rubble. The glow didn't illuminate the cavern at all. In fact, the glow seemed even darker then black, with almost a violet tint. Even though it was cold, almost icy, down there she could feel herself sweating. She stepped carefully closer to the rubble. Step by step she found herself breathing more heavily. She coughed and the rubble shifted.
One blood red eye opened, focusing on her for a second before the second opened and the pile unfolded and raised high up to the roof of the cavern. It cast out one of its scaly, puss covered arms placing it before Amelia with such care and meaning that the mere act was as if it were a luxury to witness such a step. The rock bubble and boiled under its dripping claw.
The lone Doctor stood before it in awe. "How beautiful." She whispered, a giant grin growing on her face. The claw melted into the floor and with a mighty tug the beast tightened its muscles and the claw slide heavily through the rock toward it. Lime green vapor emanated from its six nostrils, or so Amelia guessed were nostrils.
The creature elegantly brushed passed the grimy vapor, as if stepping from a world of myth and legend. A fresh smell of rotten flesh clenched to the Doctor's nostrils, making her gage a bit. Yet, she still looked on taking in every sugary bit.
Its long crooked head oozed as it eyed her with a silently building annoyance.  It was then she realized the creature wasn't fully there as its body protruded from a small hole. "Let me guess you saw a hole and decided you could fit through it. While I admit you're a sight to see, and believe me you are quite a delegate specimen to say the least, I'm afraid…there's nothing for you here on…this side for a dragon…" The smell was getting far worse than before. She looked up at it just in time to see it narrowing its gaze at her, a long silver tongue the other claw shot out toward her only to land a few feet away, sizzling.
"..ah…I see…all this effort made ya…kind of hungry, eh? Here…let me help…" she took a deep breath only to fill her lungs with infected air. With no choice she took out her mining laser. Clicking off the safety and squeezed the trigger. A flash of light filled the room as the laser sliced through the rock grazing the beasts chest. It roared, raddling the cavern.
"Oops." Amelia breathed, aiming a little lower, a second flash as it drilled deep into the bedrock. The dragon seemed to cackle as it slowly but surely lifting itself from the dead earth. First its body raised up, showing off its long silver belly, the color clearly having been melted down its body, then the back legs latched up onto the ledge and finally the other. Steam puffed with each step, lowering into the rock. Before her stood a building of magnificence compacted into the small cavern. The green smoke increased and flowed more freely. "There…" she coughed, nearly hacking up her lunch, "…let's get…you…something…to eat then…"

Sure, it's got a few errors in it, but it's still really good. You should do some more with this! Maybe you could stop by and say hi. We are a great group of writers who like to share thoughts and ideas. Mostly, we are just nice people who like to make new friends while we work on our writing. You can find us here: [link] Hope you can stop by. Oh, and sorry if this seemed like spam, even if you don't stop by, keep up the great work, I think I'll be back to read more. *added to watch list*

Oh, thank you! I do plan on writing more short stories but I kind of take a while on my works since it is just a hobby. Though this story I might use later at some point. Not sure yet. I'll take a look at that writer's group you mentioned. Sounds interesting. Also, thanks for the watch!
