Description
Did a quick doodle to demonstrate how I draw recentlyStep 1 is a very messy doodle. I use paint tool sai and usually start out with a really big canvas (dont ask why, that's just how I've always done things...) I doodle with the brush tool size 9 and zoom at around 33%
Step 2 I start my lineart. Usually I draw one I, copy and paste that (because I'm lazy) and flip it horizontally.
Using the free deform option I change it a bit so it's not completely the same as the first eye.
I don't draw in the pupils until later, trying to get the shape and placement right first.
I also draw in the nose, and no matter how hard I try I always make the nose too small. I use transform og free deform to change the size and placement, checking the inverted image to get it right.
Step 3 Here I made the eyes smaller and slightly further apart.
drawing the jawline I also start by drawing one side, then copy that, flip it and tweak it with free deform.
For drawing the lashes I like to set the brush as an eraser to add the lighter lines.
Step 4 This is my favorite step. Creating a new layer I go crazy with the hair
Step 5 And then the rest of the hair. I love spiky hair
Step 6 I draw the ears and the neck and add some heavier lines to make the lineart look good. I also lowered the mouth and nose using transform to make the chin a little smaller. And I delete the first doodle layer.
Step 7 I copy a screen tone, here I used a fine dotted one I found here on dA, unto an underlying layer and change the opacity. I erase the parts that I dont want.
Step 8 I create a new layer and clip it to the screen tone layer. On this new layer I add some shadow using the pen tool with the canvas texture.
Step 9 I lower the opacity on the clipped layer. On the screen tone layer I use the airbrush tool as an eraser to add highlights to the hair. On the original lineart layer I add some light lines to make the highlight pop a bit more.
Step 10 I usually don't do this step, but I wanted to play around, so choosing another fine dotted screen tone I once more copy/paste that, this time to colour/shade the skin.
I erase it to the right shape.
Step 11 I erase the parts I want light and leave the shadowy areas. I use the blending tool and the airbrush as eraser to blur the harsh edges. On an overlying layer I once again use the pen tool to add shadows.
Step 12 I change the opacity and add some smoother shadows with the airbrush tool.
I also use the airbrush tool set as eraser to make the lineart of the hair a bit lighter where the actual light would hit. On the topmost layer I use the pen tool to make som white dots in the hair and eyes.
And that's it!
As you can see I cheat quite a lot with my copy/pasting and free deform'ing
Hopefully you'll be able to see the differences between the steps

This is amazing! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for making this! And oh wow, I am having my mind freaked right now!
This was very educational (I'm so gonna steal the copy/pasting thing, but free deforming has always given me trouble, I must practise!)
I freaking love your tutorials, thanks again!

I don't know, everything? MOstly how you go from just one sketch which is so simple compared to what I always make, and then just make super amazing and detailed lineart Remember that I usually have three layers with doodles on them before I even begin consider doing the lines!
And ahaha, nooope, I don't have the patience to even begin thinking about doing one of these, half of it would just be slowly growing sjetches and doodles
