Description for my main worldbuilding project. made this for a contest in a writing server's worldbuilding club (run by me... it was my contest... and i won... hehe)

Here is the text I included with it:

## The humans of my scifantasy world

Elves have extreme genetic variety due to a high susceptibility to genetic mutations, to the point that there are actually multiple species of elves. one of these species developed rounded ears. Eventually people considered these round-ear people different enough from other elves that they started calling them an entirely different name: humans.

## genetic differences from elves; advantages

Aside from rounded ears, humans had one major difference: they were not as susceptible to mutation. This meant they multiplied quickly since less died from malignant mutations, but it also meant their overall gene pool stayed the same for thousands of years, which made them stand out. Though the ancient humans may look to still have great genetic variety (especially compared to modern ones!) it was actually almost exclusively in their skin/hair colors, facial structures, and heights, whereas elves also differed in their organs, limbs, skin function, etc.

The above reduced mutation is their greatest advantage over elves. It's not so great that elves go extinct, unlike many other sapient species. (Though the others mostly got crazy unlucky ) Another advantage is their general robustness; they can easily live in a wide range of climates without much issue, whereas each species of elf is usually only capable of living in one specific climate. All advantages humans have over the reptilian/avian species are shared with elves, so I won't discuss them.

**comments on each example**
A: this group lived in the north and were essentially de-melanised versions of B.
B: this race has the same skin/hair/eyes/facial structure as the largest race of ancient elves. I guess maybe they were the first to develop the rounded ears. Idk.
C: I don't have much to say on this one.
D: This man has no solid dev, but the modern humans regard him as a god once they forget that he was a real mortal. You'll notice he looks like a modern human, and very similar to E1 and E2 below. The modern humans are largely descended from his race.

## modern humans

As you can see, the variation has gone way down! There's still great variety in *amount* of melanin, but the *types* of melanin have greatly decreased. Now humans basically come in varying shades of brown and beige. as I said above, this is because they almost all descend from D's race. I don't know why. My dev is spotty. A LOT of ancient species/segments of species go extinct in a supervolcano explosion; maybe it was because of that. Shrug.

I really don't have too much to say about these ones. The light skin ones emerged the same way light skin IRL humans emerged.

**comments on examples**
E1, E2: These are the same race, the same ethnicity even. I'm not sure why I included both. These are the closest relatives to D, and they are from the culture that considers him a god.
F: No comment.
G: No comment.
H: If people were aware of ancient human genetics, they might wonder if this race came from C instead of D, since they have similar facial structure and vaguely similar skin tone, and they are "from" the same area, but they'd probably be wrong.
