Aero woke up drenched; lying on the soggy moss she looked up and saw sunlight filtering through the branches. Even though it was spring the chill of winter was still heavy. Aero's arms wrapped around her body trying to get warm. She looked over, relieved to see Mitch curled up in a corner at the back of the little shelter. Aero yawned and got up hoping to find wild berries or something, she remembered Mitch's warning the other day about how they should find wild foods that were safe to eat and save the pretzels and other snacks sparingly in case they really needed them.
Aero crawled out blinking into the sunlight. 'A beautiful day' she thought 'or a day to die' she shivered thinking about how easily this could be their one day left. Aero walked down to the stream to get a drink hoping maybe to find a fish. She bent down cupping her hands into the water bringing her hands up to her lips, shocked by how cold it was, her teeth grew numb. 'I'd like to see what this water would feel like in winter "she laughed to herself. Aero stretched her neck to see if she could see any fish. Suddenly her feet slipped and Aero fell into the swirling black water heading downstream, farther away from camp.
Aero felt the water pulling her down, not giving her chance to come up for air, and the rocks, they kept hitting her legs stomach and torso. Bruising her and knocking the wind out of her. Aero thought back to earlier that day when she said it might be a day to die but aero also remembered the promise she made. Aero opened her eyes and saw she wasn't far from where she fell off but if she didn't get off of this current she would be badly injured and worse be lost in this unknown wilderness.
Aero tried clawing at the bank but that would not stop her. Aero saw something further downstream, "it's…a tree branch"! She yelled with delight. When she reached it aero clawed her way on it with determination. Aero then crawled onto the grass laying there freezing and exhausted. "Mitch" she mumbled, "I need to find him" she crawled back into the forest trying to find a source of direction to the camp where Mitch was. "Aero!" she heard a voice call. Aero heard another yell and screamed back towards it. With relief Aero saw Mitch stumbling towards her.
